In life, people face the pressures of conformity in their everyday lives from school, to just going shopping for clothing. Throughout literature, protagonists face the pressures of conformity in their lives no matter the age of the character. Both The Giver by Lois Lowry and Number Twelve looks just like You by John Tomerlin deal with pressures of conformity, but they do so in different ways. Both texts are similar because both protagonists want or try to escape the conformity that is within their communities. “In Number Twelve looks just like You”, Marilyn knows that conformity in her community is wrong.
Furthermore, conformity makes people believe they can't speak out. This is a negative thing because they can't fix what they're
Weather it comes to saying “hi” to an employee when you walk into a store,close the door behind you when you walk out of a room, or even simply washing your hands after using the restroom, society, stereotypes, and the media can mold and shift your ideas, morals, and opinions rapidly. For example in the novel “The Giver”it illustrates that Jonas the protagonist lives in this somewhat “perfect” community where there are no mistakes (tolerated) and no emotion other than happiness. However, one may disagree and say “social norms help us and teach us new things”. In reality the “teaching” could be something bad but no one would know because they are already blinded by their previous words and are clueless. In Jonas's Community they live in
In the Novel ‘The Giver’ the author, Lois Lorwy uses many language techniques to convey the message that the world can turn into a dystopian society. Numbering people in the order they were born, taking away choice of job and having a state controlled family structure can all contribute to a dystopian society and Lowry is warning us of the possibilities that it could be like. The author uses dehumanisation as a strong theme throughout the book. Numbering people takes away individuality, this is shown through this quote “Sometimes parents used them in irritation at a child's misbehaviour, indicating that mischief made one unworthy of a name.” Lowry uses the adjective ‘unworthy’ to describe that the children do not deserve a name if they are misbehaving.
In the novel, The Giver Conformity plays a major role in it. Here are some examples of conformity playing a major role in the novel. In the novel, it states “This year you get your assignment. ”(52)This shows conformity because they are assigned their jobs instead of being able to choose themselves and do what they want to do.
In The Giver, Lois Lowry shows her readers what it is like to live in a society with no diversity, no color, and no freedom. In this society, there is a twelve-year old boy, named Jonas, who finds the truth about life outside of his community. He does not have the option of choice, and he is stuck in a futuristic world of “sameness”. Jonas’ world is dull, and he wants to change it because it does not have the amazing features and opportunities that he learns about. In this story, Lois Lowry is warning her readers that too much conformity can lead to no freedom and no true happiness.
Whether it’s in real life, or from an authors imagination, community will always impact a persons’ or characters’ actions during a difficult situation. Being in a troubling situation can bring out the best or the worst in someone. Unfortunately, a persons’ first instinct might not be the best or most favorable, and this can be a result of a community’s impact. In most science fiction stories the characters all show a similar trait, defiance. Defiance means to act with open resistance and bold disobedience.
Red Apple “Perfection is never reachable” If we began to examine every effort in people, almost 99% of all humans try at least one occasion to grant perfection level. By the way, I'm just referring to the percentage as a one-time occasion, but then we have the other percentage of humans who tried every day to be as perfect as our God, which is wrong, if we tried more and push ourselves to be greater by altering us more just to get a "perfect" grade, isn't worth it. But in the image I created I'm not referring the apple as homework, I'm representing it as us, the human race. Disobedience is an essential aspect of human nature, while disobedience is generally a trait seen negatively, the results caused by disobedience can lead to great success. America is a country that was founded on the idea of disobedience, the ambitions of our forefathers culminated in the ideas of liberty. Early in the history of our country there was slavery, slavery was devastating to a huge population of people being shipped from their homes to be traded and bartered for. In such conditions it was only natural for these slaves to revolt, continuing to revolt even as there were laws placed down preventing them from escaping such as the Fugitive Slave Act. People were drawn by their morality and helped these slaves even if it was considered an incorrect action.
Debate-written Assignment, Conformity The idea of conformity is to eliminate individualism and to unite the society together, making it a safer place for the citizens to live, and develop in. A place that has no war, no hunger and no pain, where citizens create strong bonds between each other. The Giver written by Lois Lowry represents the idea of conformity in the society where they try to keep everyone the same as each other by following the same rules and trying to avoid having people stand out by receiving daily pills to lose the feeling of inclination between each other.
To what extent can a perfect society be possible? In the novel The Giver the society was established to be a utopian world but, ended up becoming not so perfect after all with terrible things hiding underneath the surface. Modern day society is far from perfect; however, it does have some similarities with Jonas´ home along with many differences. In today's society we pride ourselves on having the freedom to choose our own lifestyle.
As The Giver tells Jonas,“ ‘There’s much more. There’s all that goes beyond-all that is Elsewhere-and all that goes back, and back, and back’ “(78). Lois Lowry is trying to convey the theme to his audience about the importance of memory. He does this by showing his readers many symbols such as, the colors, red specifically, the hills, and music, representing each other’s differences, the ups and downs in life, and emotions. Lois Lowry is trying to show his audience what life would be like if there was no memory of the past and if all we had known was the things already planned out for us, such as the people had experienced in the story, The Giver.
Obedience and Emotion "Rules are the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" (Harry Day). Although boundaries and guidelines are important for the success of a society, it is also invaluable to know the gift of freedom. If one is foolishly obedient and follows only the orders they are given, there is no growth for their future. People will start to become robots and will never learn some of life's most crucial lessons.
Imagine living in a perfect society. No pain, everyone is equal, and perfect laws that every person follows. Now imagine being exactly like every other person with all your daily choices being made by someone else for you. In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, this is exactly how they are living. The author writes about how Jonas’ perfect society is not so perfect after all.
