Flowers for Algernon tells us a story to give us an experience through many different progress reports and shows us how to learn and grow.
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes uses many elements such as Imagery, Metaphors and Connotation/Denotation to convey the overcoming of obstacles and love in American society & culture.

Nemur is increasingly getting strained over time and that he is slightly hinting towards a fight or possibly that something happened between them and they are growing apart from that. This all ties back to our them of Connotation because he is saying that they are growing apart and using a word and its literal definition to define what is going on with him and Prof. Nemur and he is getting worried I think because he is scared that losing Prof. Nemur would be the downfall for everything. The rhetorical device in this quote would be Connotation because Keyes is using the actual definition of the word and he is taking it and using it in a different way that some people interpret it as.
