In modern society, technology and commerce have allowed human beings to not only think of their reality as the near territory that they live in but more universally. It is possible to participate and imagine what is going on in the lives of distant others. Cosmopolitanism unifies everyone in protecting humanity as a whole especially considering these circumstances. As a result of this, a collective mentality can exist. To elaborate on a specific example, global warming is an international problem that affects humanity as a whole. The problem is not one of a specific country. The scarf affair in France is an example of such a barrier. In a cosmopolitan world there will be clashes of culture that exist. However, as in this case the cultural alien resulted in democratic iteration that re-signified the meaning behind the head scarf. This question of the right to wear the head scarf was seen as a question of individual autonomy by many French citizens. In an international world with international organizations that are representative of all humanity the need to choose between individual autonomy and inclusiveness in society will not need to be questioned as deliberation at an international level will address universal rights that are bound to all citizens of the world. In a world where a group has the right to protect their own religion universally or at least deliberate their freedom to practice their religion at an international level one will formulate an attachment to that institution such as the attachment Canadians have to the Charter.
