Elias Cantor Mrs, Almeida English 4 H March 11th, 2022 The Courage to Save a Mockingbird It is amazing, the courage and bravery of some people in this world. In the popular southern-gothic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, there are many impressive displays of courage. It is set in Alabama during the great recession. In a time and place of widespread racism, it is extremely unlikely for a black man’s word to be trusted over a white woman’s. If some of the actions depicted in this book were to happen in real life, it would be all over the news and the public would be in awe. He did this in the hope that his children could grow up with a dad. Tom is accused of a crime he does not commit. He knows that it is extremely unlikely that he could win the case because of the general racism in Maycomb. Instead of giving up, and running away, he stays and tries to win the case. "Tom Robinson: Looks like she didn't have nobody to help her. I felt right sorry for her” [Lee 180]. He even feels bad for Mayella because he knows that she does not have anyone to help her. She takes advantage of this and ends up getting him killed. Tom is a genuinely kind person and is courageous enough to take on a crime he does not commit. Atticus helps Tom even though it put him in harm's way and there is no one forcing him to do that. Tom tries to testify in court instead of running away because he wants to be there with his family. Boo helps Jem and Scout not get killed by Mr. Ewell even though he had no obligation to do so. All of these actions are motivated not by greed, but by moral values that these characters want to uphold and keep prominent. Throughout history, many people have exploited and cheated other people completely out of greed. Some people say it is human nature and some say it is taught, either way, it is something that everyone has seen. Most people have probably done something extremely greedy no matter how small. When faced with a situation in which it would be extremely easy to take the easy way out and back down, Atticus, Tom, and Boo persevere and have the courage to take the hard way that is the right
