Many people in the world today show courage. Merriam-Webster defines courage as the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. There were many characters in To Kill a Mockingbird that showed courage. Three of these characters include Atticus Finch, Jem Finch, and Arthur Radley.
Atticus Finch displayed a wealth of courage. Atticus was a single father raising two children. He worked hard to ensure that his children were well cared for and that they were raised as respectful citizens of Maycomb, Georgia. Atticus was a brave man and earned respect from his children by defending Tom Robinson. Atticus, Jem, and Scout were often harassed and teased for defending Tom. Even though Atticus faced many hardships he had courage and kept going. For example, when Bob Ewell spit on Atticus and cussed him, Atticus just walked away and refused to engage in an altercation with Bob. He was able to do this because he had courage.
Jem Finch was also courageous just like his father was courageous. Jem showed courage on several different occasions as he bravely defended friends and family. One occasion was when Scout was beating up Walter Cunningham and Jem stood up for Walter. Arthur was a peaceful person who stayed at home and never came out to socialize with others. One night when Scout and Jem were standing out in the cold, Arthur snuck and wrapped a blanket around them. No one noticed that Arthur had done this, not even Jem and Scout. On another night, when Jem and Scout were attacked by Bob Ewell, Arthur left his home to save them. He killed Bob Ewell to protect Jem and Scout and then carried Jem home because he was badly hurt and unable to walk. Arthur was truly a hero as he went above and beyond to save others.
