Aristotle once said “A man doesn't become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall.” A tragic hero is defined as a literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his or her own destruction. In the play Antigone the tragic hero is played by creon the king who was appointed after the previous king was killed by his brother. Creon fits a tragic hero because of three reasons. Creon suffers more than he deserves, a tragic hero must be noble in nature, but imperfect so that the audience can see themselves in him. For those reasons creon is the best example for a tragic hero
Creon suffers more than he does which makes him the tragic hero by the eyes of aristotle. To begin Antigone, Creon’s niece is upset with him because she wants to bury her brother but the edict he has given denies her that right. Antigone could not be the tragic hero mainly because tragic heros have a flaw that leads to their downfall. doing right by the dead should not be a flaw but a gift. Next antigone never actually suffers in the play therefore she does not suffer more than she deserves. If it was said that she suffered more than she deserves by being put to death then they would be wrong if you go against or disobey the law you deserve the punishments given. Creon actually has to suffer he has to live the rest of his life thinking that his ignorance killed his family. The only details of a tragic hero that antigone fits is she that she is of noble birth. Can it still be called noble if your father married his mother. For these reasons antigone is not the tragic hero. Antigone may be the protagonist but it doesn’t mean she is a tragic hero.
