There are cats of cruelty all over john Steinbeck’s novel of mice and men some acts of cruelties involve gender, race, age, disabilities. Cruelty in all forms causes destruction for the victom’s in of mice and men. There can not be cruelty without someone causing it. Carlson and Curley’s wife are two examples of cruelty causing destruction in “of mice and men”. Two of the characters that went through the most cruelty in the story were candy and crooks. This is a form of cruelty because Carlson does not consider that candy can relate to the dog because he is also old and candy fears that once he can no longer clean Curley or Carlson will get rid of him. During pages 80 to 82 Curley’s wife is making crooks feel bad by reminding him what world they live in. after Lennie and Candy come in to crooks room Curley’s wife soon followed and when told to leave by crooks she said “listen n-word you know what I can do to you if you open your trap.”(Steinbeck 80) Curley’s wife says this to crooks because he is the only one she is above and she knows if he does anything, he will get in trouble. This shows that both Carlson and Curley’s wife do not care how their words affect others. There are examples for who went through the most cruelty are candy and crooks.
