The Great Gatsby was written by author F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. The novel, set place in 1922, is a flashback of Nick Carraway’s experiences during his summer in West Egg, New York. Recently, Gatsby has had one of his grand parties and Nick has attended a lunch with Gatsby and Meyer Wolfsheim. During the 1920’s the pursuit for wealth and recognition in order to reach a certain status corrupted people and had them make unacceptable decisions. Throughout the novel the concept of classes in society is prevalent.
Nick has several biases which are obvious throughout the novel. His first bias is a general bias in favor of millionaires. Nick discloses that he is comfortable around millionaires: “the consoling proximity of millionaires” (5).This is important because it shows that he is comfortable and wants to be around millionaires’ more than poor people. Since he likes millionaires, more than poor people that causes him to have a bias toward them. With this bias, his description of wealthy characters is obscured which causes Nick to be less critical of them.
In Tim O’Brien’s “Speaking of Courage,” Norman Bowker, a Vietnam veteran, encounters a town that perceives war differently than he does. In Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, the narrator faces a counterman at a diner that sees the narrator differently than the narrator does. When these two texts stand next to each other, it is reminiscent of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, when Willy Loman and his family perceive Willy differently. The same idea is present in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “Yellow Wallpaper,” when the woman and her husband John view her malady differently. Although everyone knows people perceive things differently, these varying perceptions cause communication to fail.

The Great Gatsby is hailed as a great piece of 1920 's fiction due to its detailing of a new, fast paced America, and the way that America affected the population. These affects manifested as traits in people, and further developed into stereotypes. In the post World War 1 America this novel is set in, industry and technology were becoming readily available to the public, cementing these stereotypes into our population as we quickly moved along at a new pace. Today, many people witness the discrimination against one another, including the discrimination against females; though F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote “The I.O.U.” in the 1920s, many females relate to the way the men in the story treat the females. Fitzgerald created a story that focused on a publisher who aimed to publish the book “The Aristocracy of the Spirit World” knowing that the book would bring in money. Throughout the story, the publisher’s main goal is to earn as much money as he can; he even goes to such lengths as to make a man disappear for the next ten years. Though his journey to make money, he faces the problem of the character of his book being alive and the story being false. Many readers of this story, focus on the main character and money; however, they overlook the way the publisher discriminates almost all the females mentioned in the story.
The Great Gatsby Plot: Nick Carraway, a young lad from Minnesota, moves to New York in the summer of 1922 to learn about the bond business.
