Ironically, Tom Buchanan and his wife left town right after Gatsby dies. For example, “I called up Daisy half an hour after we found him… But she and Tom had gone away early that afternoon, and taken baggage with them” (Fitzgerald 164). Even though the connection between Buchanan and his wife was not the strongest, he still loved her, and felt obligated to protect her; so, they both left town. The book ended with a pessimistic finality. Jay Gatsby failed in the end as he lost Daisy to Tom. Tom forced their family to leave East Egg and move far away. Jay does not know this though, and is waiting for a phone call from Daisy to tell him she wants to run away with him. While waiting for this call, a distraught man comes in a shoots Gatsby as he’s exiting his pool.
This encouraged Gatsby to head out and make something of himself. Five years later, after becoming a member of the upper class, Gatsby planned to reunite with the now married Daisy Buchanan. However there love becomes something of the past. Leaving the past behind is no easy task, ultimately this leads to the death of Jay Gatsby. In many towns, communities, countries, curfews could leave many teens without the right they deserve. Death occurs in both stories and this is ultimately the worst way to end a relationship. The first death in the The Great Gatsby is when Daisy murders Myrtle. The quote (“A moment later she rushed out into the dusk, waving her hands and shouting - before he could move from his door the business was over.” pg.109) gives you a visual of the death. Even though it was an accident it was very odd that Myrtle unknowingly ran over her husband’s mistress.

Titles such as Of Mice and Men, Inherit the Wind, and The Great Gatsby all have character deaths as a major part of their plotlines. Even though these deaths are a major event to the readers of the novel, it minimally affects the other characters of the story. Theses novels show that death doesn’t affect the masses – life goes on.
Literary deaths always have a meaning, and the abrupt demise of various characters in The Great Gatsby is no exception. As tensions build and secret loves are proclaimed, characters begin to meet untimely deaths. F.
