My Thesis Statement

What makes up a good paper? When I personally think about what makes up a strong paper my mind immediately jumps to having an idea strongly backed with a bunch of information and evidence, however this isn't always the case. Of course, having evidence and support is essential, but I came to the realization that there is such thing as having too much information. In my case, this lead to me writing a broad thesis to permit for all my material to fit into my paper. My worst paper written was due to a weak thesis because my central idea wasn't narrow and focused.
Since, I had a broad thesis this meant my ideas were to tangible and could have been answered in multiple aspects. By narrowing my thesis statement, it would've allowed for a stronger paper. According to The Bedford Handbook, "an effective thesis statement is a central idea that conveys your purpose-your reason for writing-and that requires support (19)." While my thesis did give the purpose of my paper I allowed for too many positions to be taken, as well as wide set of evidence that would be required to support my position. Writing a narrow, focused thesis statement is important because the position in which you take throughout the paper is evident in the beginning and the evidence that follows gives direct response to the position held. The Handbooks solution to having a broad thesis is to "focus on a subtopic of your original topic (23)," by doing so I could have
