Journal #7 On page 182, Lily thinks to herself, “If August is the red heart on Mary’s chest, Rosaleen is the fist.” Lily believes August has the heart of Mary because she puts everyone before herself. For example, August tells Lily, “If it (the Caribbean Pink House) can lift Mary’s heart like that, I guess she ought to live inside it” (147). August seemed to be more like her grandmother. August states, “[her grandmother] taught . . . [her] more than just how to keep bees” (143). August became the person she is today because she gained her traits from her grandmother. August learned how to care for the bees with love and not distrust which shows how she easily accepts everyone for who they are. August’s mother and grandmother about religion. She wants to spread her knowledge to others, so her religious beliefs and knowledge will be told throughout many generations, like when the Mary statue came into possession of her family.
