Journal #7 On page 182, Lily thinks to herself, “If August is the red heart on Mary’s chest, Rosaleen is the fist.” Lily believes August has the heart of Mary because she puts everyone before herself. For example, August tells Lily, “If it (the Caribbean Pink House) can lift Mary’s heart like that, I guess she ought to live inside it” (147). August wanted to choose a different color, but what mattered to her more was her little sister, May. August believes that with all the pain and grief May suffers from she deserves to have things that make her happy. Another example, is when Neil is introduced into the story and asks Lily, “How long are you planning on staying?” (105). August seemed to be more like her grandmother. August states, “[her grandmother] taught . . . [her] more than just how to keep bees” (143). August became the person she is today because she gained her traits from her grandmother. August learned how to care for the bees with love and not distrust which shows how she easily accepts everyone for who they are. August’s mother and grandmother about religion. August used on of her mother’s playing cards as the label for her honey (143). This shows that, August wanted people to feel comfort and security that Mary was looking after her consumers. August learned to help others even in the smallest ways without people ever really thinking about it. She also helped start a religion in her town that others can believe in. August wanted to share the stories she was told about the Lady of Chains and of how Mary was discovered. She wants to spread her knowledge to others, so her religious beliefs and knowledge will be told throughout many generations, like when the Mary statue came into possession of her family. August told Lily that she never wanted to get married because she felt that she had “enough restrictions in . . . [her] life” (145).
