Discrimination and inequality are both unfair and oppressive ways to make people feel inferior and suffer a detriment as a result, in turn discrimination and unequal treatment leaves the individual or group of people suffers of oppression. Discrimination and unequal treatment play a huge part in every community, and especially with regards to certain groups within each. This assignment will critically analyse discrimination and inequality within the community, evaluate Equality Legislation in Ireland, and weigh up how your own prejudice attitudes and assumptions can affect your role as a social care practitioner.

This Legislation is incorporated into policies of schools, places of work and any other institution which has a code of conduct. Are these policies adhered to? What happens in schools and places of work if an individual goes against the code of conduct? Does anyone know the consequences, or are there any? The first ground under which it is unlawful to discriminate someone under is based on a person's race. This is where an individual or group of people cannot be treated differently because they are of a different race, nationality, colour or place of origin (Equality Act,2004). If this ground stands, why are there people who still suffer racial abuse? The second ground under which discrimination cannot occur is based on an individual's religion, you cannot be discriminated against because of the religion in which you follow (Equality Act, 2004). If this ground stands, why are women of Islamic faith not allowed to wear the hijab, which is the scarf like material placed over the head and clipped under their chin (About Religion,2014), in certain institutions like schools, or if you are a member of the guards you cannot wear it while you are on duty? The third ground under which an individual cannot be discriminated against is gender. You cannot be treated differently or unequal if you are male or female (Equality Act,2004). If this ground stands then why are men employed in certain professions over women? The fourth ground under which discrimination is not accepted is based on age (Equality Act, 2004). If it is not legal for someone to discriminate you regarding your age, why are you not allowed into certain films in the cinema if you are not of a certain age?
