The Dumbing Down Of Society
Even though the people of Fahrenheit 451 have an easy lifestyle, technology is the main factor that is making that society dumb. The reason being is that here are new inventions constantly being created or updated to make our life more simple. As a matter of fact, it makes us lazier because we no longer have to think because a mechanical device is doing everything for us. In Fahrenheit 451, technology greatly affects their education system, and makes people confuse fiction with reality.

As a matter of fact, you were seen as strange and weird, because you didn’t have the next latest thing, such as the wall-to-wall tvs or satellites on your roof. Since this type of technology was all around them, they found themselves immersed in it. Technology would take them to an even greater extent where they would mistake the real world with the fictional world that they’re in with technology. “The televisor is ‘real.’ It is immediate, it has dimension. It tells you what to think and it blasts it in. It must be right. It seems so right. It rushes you on so quickly to its own conclusions your mind hasn’t time to protest.” (84). Even from an early age they were raised to think and breathe in a certain way, and school was no longer about “learning.” Clarisse describes school as, “An hour of TV class, an hour of basketball or baseball or running, another hour of transcription history or painting pictures, and more sports, but do you know, we never ask questions, or at least most don’t;” (29). This really shows a good description of what school is like in the dystopian world. It shows how the government, he main management of these schools, wants their society and future generations to participate in activities where learning and receiving knowledge does not exist.
