Many of those who criticize videogames do this by comparing them to books. This comparison is seen as injurious and incorrect to author Steven Johnson. He believes the two are separate from each other and should not be looked at as one in the same. In his essay “Games” he outlines and argues that reading and gaming are different from each other, that both should be valued in their own way, and that books are crafted for and are better at expressing knowledge and opinion. A book and a video game are more unalike than many are willing to believe; they are both completely different mediums.
What is the right thing to do? Ellie Wiesel believes people should do the right thing, but more importantly these should choose a side. Indifference is worse than anger, rage, and hatred as Ellie said, “Anger can at times be creative. One writes a great poem, a great symphony, have done something special for the sake of humanity because one is angry at the injustice that one witnesses”(Elie Wiesel, The Perils of Indifference). With indifference people are only punishing the victim and helping to achieve the goal of the unrighteous.
The murderers of this novel were relatively likely. The twists and storyline the author puts behind them, on the other hand, was not likely. Once the reader reads that there is money involved, that is probably going to be the motive for any murder, and this case is no different. Mr. Jefferson was going to split 50,000 pounds between his daughter-in-law and son-in-law as inheritance since his children had died in an airplane accident. Once Ruby Keene is in the picture and Mr. Jefferson grows fond of her to the point where he wants to adopt Ruby, the money would go to her.
Full-time writer Barbara Lazear Ascher’s 1988 essay “On Compassion” conveys her perspective about interactions between people of different social classes to reveal her opinion on the reasons for compassion and where compassion should come from. Ascher’s purpose is to have her audience question the ways that compassion can be shown and to challenge society’s fear of “raw humanity”(11). She adopts a warm but clinical tone in order to prompt her audience, the literate and the intellectually curious, to question the motives behind compassion. Ascher begins her essay by invoking the primal fear of when anyone or anything unfamiliar approaches.
Life will often put us in difficult situations and we are responsible to change our attitudes and even our ideals to cope or comprehend tough times. In his audio essay, Kevin Myers expresses his ideals of forgiving others and showing them compassion, instead of paying them with rage and anger. When we are treated unfairly and without any consideration of our situation, our first instinct is to repay those individuals with revenge but Myers opposes this and says we should show compassion. In this essay, he tells his story and how it leads him to learn the virtue of forgiveness. We see, how his mother instilled in him the ability to forgive and show compassion to those who harmed him.
The book If I Grow Up by Todd Strasser tells the story of a young boy who spends his life living in a gang-filled neighborhood. For DeShawn, gunshots and violence have become part of his normal life for years. All of his friends have joined gangs, but he knows that if he joins he’ll end up dead or in jail. If I Grow Up shows a ton of important issues we still struggle with in the world today, and brings awareness to these issues with the impact of dialogue. Todd Strasser uses dialogue to stir empathy, provide background information/context, and get readers predicting.
Empathy -- to step outside of one’s emotions and submerge within another’s. To the chagrin of the global community, there is a prominent deficit of that inherent attribute. Arguably, a growing population has fallen as victims to passive, unconscious emotions and fail to see the importance of radiating empathy within their everyday lives. Yet through the sea of indifference lies literature that teaches the significance of empathy, one being Harper Lee’s unforgettable novel: To Kill a Mockingbird.
Eli Wiesel witnessed hatred, hatred for Jewish people and anyone that was different. Eli Wiesel talked about compassion to show people that compassion is a necessity. Because without compassion, there is only hatred. Eli Wiesel wanted to make sure that this point got across. Because Eli Wiesel wanted to make sure what happened, never happens again.

Animals whose relationship to humans is based solely on use value are considered lower than pets. For example, these animals are used for food products, clothing, transportation, and animal testing. But what should always be considered when looking at the effects of any video game is how factors such as age, personality traits, and prior exposure to media influence how individuals respond to different types of video game content. So whether a game like Battlefield makes individuals more aggressive, hostile behavior, desensitization and attention or whether it creates better communication skills, empathy, critical thinking skills, it all depends on outside factors that affect each individual. My Brain on screen paper relates to this time capsule in the sense that based on my own personal factors such as my personal traits, age, the generation I was born into, and my exposure to video games, I personally never got into them. I have played video games here and there, but personally I never got too attached in the sense that I never really got upset over losing or not being able to properly play. So for me personally I would say that I do not find that video games bring out aggressive behaviours or make me lose my concentration, but on the other hand I can not say that it necessarily taught me empathy or critical thinking
Over the years there has been a big controversy over whether video games are relatively good or extremely bad for children. Video games are super beneficial to a kid’s learning process and have been proven to increase social skills, productivity, and stress. The fear that video games are harmful to a child, is proven through countless experiments that they are actually great for their growth and brain capacity. Video games can increase the social skills in a child, Xbox and PlayStation provide great opportunities for cooperation and competition. Two different studies, one by Katherine Keyes and the other by Vinay Devnath, both have proved that the use of video games can increase the social skills that many children can’t grasp, “Video game playing is often a collaborative leisure time activity for school-aged children, and these results indicate that children who frequently play video games may be socially cohesive with peers and integrated into the school”( Keyes, PhD).

Approximately 90% of children in the United States play video games, and more than 90% of those games involve mature content that often includes violence (Park, 2014). There are those that believe video games are detrimental to society, however playing video games including those with mature content can actually be beneficial to both individuals and society by increasing knowledge expanding the ability to react positively at real life situations and improving cognitive thinking skills. Children that play video games not only have the potential to increase their ability to learn right from wrong, and to improve their cognitive thinking skills the game can also increase a child’s knowledge.
But today researchers are finding that video games can actually change us for the better and improve both our mind and body. Which is why today I am going to persuade you that video games are beneficial not just a waste of time. In this speech I will be talking about the benefits of video games on us and why it makes our life better by explaining:
