When I initially read the first few paragraphs of “Thanks for Not Killing My Son”, I was confused about Rita Schindler’s intent in writing her letter and her relation to the victim. At first I thought that Schindler was a reporter, as the first few paragraphs are written like a news article, with the exception of the perpetrators being referred to in the second person. As the letter continued, however, it became clear that Schindler was the victim’s mother, especially after her writing shifted to the first person. Through her sarcastic tone and her imagery, not only did I feel angry at the perpetrators for the brutal and random nature of the attack, but I also felt that I could feel Schindler’s pain dealing with her son’s injuries. I was also
This should have been the end of the story, however, the court allowed this murder suspect bail, which was paid. They allowed a possible murderer to walk the streets. This mistake caused Ruth Fowler to see Strout frequently around the town, who was her son’s killer. Because of the emotional condition that this put Ruth into, her husband, Matt, decided to put an end to the terrible man. He would have never had, nor been able, to kill Richard if he had still been in prison.
The similarities between Jeff Hope and Jefferson Hope was that they both allowed their victims to determine their own fate by choosing between the poisonous pill and the placebo. Each murderer turned out to be a cabbie with an aneurysm and a desire to kill that was almost primal in nature. The difference between the two murderers is that Jefferson was seeking revenge. He had devoted his life to target the Mormon mem who murdered Ferrier and forced his fiancé to marry.
Women are the society’s backbone In A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines, three women take care of not only themselves but others. These three women are Tante Lou, Miss Emma and Vivian. Tante Lou is the woman who raises Grant when his mother ran off. Miss Emma is Jefferson’s godmother and she cares for him a lot.
a) Mrs. Auld thinks Douglass should be able to read because she teaches him herself. “ My mistress- who had begun to teach me- was suddenly checked in her benevolent design,...”(Douglass 521). The author says that his mistress began to teach him, so this proves what Mrs. Auld thinks about Douglass’s reading. b) I think that Mrs. Auld is later “violent in her opposition” to Douglass’s reading because her husband gave her strong advice of not teaching Douglass how to read. “ In faithful compliance with this advice, the good lady had not only ceased to instruct me, herself, but had set her face as a flint against my learning to read by any means”(Douglass 521).
In the novel A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J Gaines, Grant is a main character that has a lot of influence over the people in his community. Some might even consider him a hero. I believe that Grant is a hero because he helps Jefferson become a man, changes himself for the better, and wants to continue changing the community. Over the course of the novel, Grant helps Jefferson become the man that he needs to be in order to walk to his death with honor. When Grant first begrudgingly went to visit Jefferson in prison Jefferson was in a really low state.
Most enslaved cooks received their training as an apprentice under other cooks. Plantation papers reveal that while most enslaved cooks were randomly chosen over the entire plantation community, some cooks were raised in the kitchen and were taught the craft across generational lines under the shadows of elder cooks. Young children gathered wood, milked cows, filled water baskets and carried them to and from the water well to the kitchen, gathered eggs, shelled peas, stirred ingredients, among other assigned tasks. Tildy Collins, a former slave, explained that children were expected to obey the cook and pull their weight in the kitchen: My Granmammy, her de head cook 'oman at de big house, an' us had to mine her lak us did Mammy. I ho'p

The readings for today consisted of the first three chapters of Searching for Life: The Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo and the Disappeared Children of Argentina by Rita Arditti and the article “Female Combatants and the Perpetration of Violence: Wartime Rape in the Sierra Leone Civil War” by Dara Kay Cohen. Both readings deal with atrocities of war, although from very different perspectives. In Searching for Life, we are introduced to the results of the instillation of a rightist regime in Argentina (Arditti, 1999). Arditti mentions the anti-Semitic feelings that many in the military carried, and how these feelings translated into particularly heinous acts against individuals who were Jewish. This brings to question the knowledge the U.S. had of

Even though Luisa Valenzuela clearly is trying confuse people I believe there is one clear conclusion, looking at all the details in the story I believe what happened was a homicide. In the book “In Cold Blood” by Truman Capote, Capote blantly describes the murderous acts of two men who killed an entire family they knew nothing about. The Clutters were good people who had no intention on hurting anyone. Dick and Perry, the murderers, had no reason to do this, meaning they had no motive for these actions and they can not be excused for their actions. In the beginning of the book, Capote introduces everyone to the Clutter Family, and a few pages further into the book he introduces everyone to Dick Hickock and Perry Smith.
