Shakespeare exposes the cutthroat politics of Rome through the speeches of Brutus and Antony in his play Julius Caesar. This play epitomizes the benefits of using rhetorical devices in a persuasive speech. Antony applies the modes ethos, logos, and pathos to establish credibility, provide evidence, and evoke emotion throughout his eulogy to Caesar. Preceding Antony’s speech was that of the senator, and friend of Caesar, Brutus. Conclusively, Antony’s use of rhetorical devices surpasses Brutus’s; Antony successfully persuades the crowd that Brutus’s speech posed as a clever ruse to justify his cold-blooded murder.
How does being a leader affect friendship? Friendship and leadership were two key themes visible in the play, Julius Caesar. In Act 3, Brutus presented the argument to plebeians that Caesar had become too powerful and tried to justify murdering Caesar. In contrast, Antony gave reasoning that Caesar was a true friend and his leadership was for the good of all citizens. This essay will examine the persuasive arguments of Brutus and Antony, shining a light on the rhetorical devices used and highlight the modes of persuasion: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos.
In Act III, Scene 2 of The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Marc Antony is able to change the mood of the crowd. The commoners transform from a confused, depressed group of people to an angry mob wanting to get back at the conspirators for their despicable action. Antony manages to do so by using ethos, pathos, and logos. These three persuasive techniques all appeal to the audience in a different way. Ethos are phrases that relate to ethics or morals and make oneself sound fair and unbiased.
Persuading an audience is difficult, but rhetorical devices can change arguments to appeal to the assortment of people listening. After killing Julius Caesar, Brutus presents a speech to the plebeians of Rome explaining why the assassination was necessary. As Brutus attempts to gain support from his fellow countrymen he utilizes ethos by proclaiming, ”believe me / for mine honour, and have respect to mine honour” (III.ii.1547-1548). The citizens hold Brutus in high regard and so he makes them all remember the positive way they think of him and uses that feeling so they all believe him. Antony has more tack as he foresees the fickle nature of the plebeians and uses pathos more often.
In the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Brutus uses Rhetorical strategy of pathos most effectively to appeal to the heart of the Romans that he had killed Caesar for the good of Rome. In the funeral of Caesar, Brutus gives his speech, in which he says, “There is tears for his love, joy for his fortune, honor for his valor and death for his ambitions” (Shakespeare 3.2.26-27). In this speech, Brutus uses pathos to appeal to the Romans that he loved and admired Caesar, though he had to kill him for his bad ambitions which could have been a potential harm to the Romans. Saying that he loved and admired Caesar would touch the heart of the general men of Rome and convince them to think that Brutus didn’t kill Caesar for any of his personal
He convinces the citizens with his sarcastic tone. He continuously says how “honorable” Brutus and Cassius are for killing Caesar. He also continues to repeat how “ambitious” Brutus claims Caesar was and contradicts him. He displays empathy towards the plebeians and remembers how empathetic Caesar was towards them. He reminds them about how he put the ransom money from his captives into Rome’s bank.
In the play, Julius Caesar, both Brutus and Antony give speeches regarding Caesar’s death. Brutus’s speech first begins with him addressing the people saying, “Believe me for mine honor, and have respect to mine honor, that you may believe. Censure me in your wisdom, and awake your senses, that you may the better judge.” This is an example of logos, which is an appeal to logic. By starting out saying that the people have better judgement than he himself, he is appealing to the audience and to their logic.
From a young age I was always thought to be respectful towards people. And as I grow up I’ve come to learn that when talking about respect it goes both ways. I can’t be disrespectful towards someone and expect them to be respectful towards me. Respect comes in many forms, shapes, sizes, and age. When Antony is speaking at Caesar's funeral he says “And Brutus is an honorable man”( Act-3-2) although he says Antony himself doesn’t believe it.
Who was more persuasive and had the biggest impact with his speech? Brutus or Antony? The play contains a conflict in which Brutus and a group of conspirators murder the so-called “leader” of Rome for being “too ambitious” and them having the fear of him becoming a tyrant. Brutus’s funeral speech in William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar was most effective due to his use of ethos, pathos, and logos.
One’s reputation is gathered by the honor bestowed on them. Throughout the ancient and modern world honor is envied by many. During the study and read of Julius Caesar, a Shakespearian play following the death of Pompey and Caesar’s downfall, many characters are tested to being honorable. The merit of having honor and being honorable are central themes within the play. Characters are affected by their decisions because of their lust for reputation.
The Tragedy of Julius Caesar- Rhetorical Analysis In the novel, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by Shakespeare, after Brutus brutally executes Caesar in Act 3 Scene 2, Antony is allowed to give a speech to the people of Rome whom have seen witnessed this fatal tragedy in Scene 3. Antony uses anaphora, connotative diction and details throughout his speech to persuade the Romans to change their perspective of Caesar and Brutus. The way Antony speaks about both Caesar & Brutus are a dispute of what he is actually trying to announce to the Romans. At the end of his speech, Antony hopes to reach the Romans emotionally (pathos) by enraging them against Brutus’s false statements against Caesar.
Antony’s Speech Using Rhetorical Appeals In William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, after Caesar’s death, the Romans are conflicted about what should be done. After Brutus’ speech the Romans are ready to crown Brutus king and be on the conspirators’ side. Though Brutus then leaves the crowd while Antony delivers his speech, the crowd realizes what should be done of Caesar’s murder and Antony prevents the conspirators from getting away with the murder of Caesar.
In Cassius’s eloquent speech against Caesar, he primarily utilizes persuasion through tools such as pathos, rhetorical questions, and compare and contrast. Cassius uses pathos to begin his monologue when he claims, “I know that virtue be in you, Brutus, / As well as I do know your outward favor” (Shakespeare 1.2.95-96). By expressing that Brutus has “virtue” and “outward favor”, Cassius appeals to Brutus’s emotions, but not to an exaggerated extent. This emotional appeal is a persuasion technique because it is used in moderation and in pertinent locations. The context is appropriate since rather than using it as a tool to feed on Brutus’s emotions, Cassius only uses it to get Brutus’s attention as an appropriate hook.
1.) Empathy: Empathy is defined as an emotional reaction that is similar to the reaction being experienced by another person (134). In other words, it is when you “put yourself in another person’s shoes”, and see things from their point of view by having the same emotional reaction as them. For example, when my friend told me her dog had passed away, I felt sad because that is how she felt. In the movie we watched in class, Emotional Intelligence, it was discussed that empathy is the most important EI skills.
In the play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar one of the main characters Caesar is killed in Scene 3 act 2.Then Brutus and Antony both give speeches about how bad they feel. Brutus gives a good speech by using all three of the rhetorical appeals to persuade the crowd to want to listen to what he say by using logos, ethos, pathos to his advantage. Brutus gives a better speech that draws the audience attention,Antony not as much. Therefor here are some very valid points on why Brutus’s speech used the Rhetorical Appeals better.
