A Death in California
On average, about 270,000 people in California pass away each year. When one thinks about deaths in California, they would most likely think about gang violence. But some of these deaths could be considered euthanasia. Euthanasia is the painless killing of someone or something that is suffering. An example of euthanasia would be when an elderly person is on life support, and they do not want to continue suffering, so they have the doctor pull the plug. So, a good number of deaths in California are examples of euthanasia, and not murders. In the Novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinback uses exquisite words to illustrate George killing Lennie. But this leaves a question embedded in the readers head: was the death of Lennie

Some people may believe that George had killed Lennie out of spite, and he had wanted him dead all along. There are a few examples of proof in which George wanted to kill Lennie. For starters, George had grabbed the gun before he had known about what Lennie had done. The book never stated that he went in to grab the gun, leading the reader to believe that he was planning on murdering Lennie all along. But the only reason that George had the gun was because he knew that Lennie would mess up eventually. He knew that if he did not take Lennie out by himself, Lennie would have been traumatized and wounded by Curley if he was not put out in a safe and peaceful manner. Another reason why one may argue that it was a murder would be because George was constantly arguing with Lennie. Every conversation that Lennie and George had ended up in George getting annoyed and yelling at Lennie. But George knew that he had to constantly help Lennie out and prepare him. There are many examples of this all throughout the book. One example of Lennies death being a euthanasia is Georgie euthanizing Lennie before Curley murdered him. Curley and Lennie already have a bad history, but when Lennie messed up to a point of no return, Curley said that he was going to shoot his guts out. This would have been an extremely painful way to pass. This led to George knowing what he had to do to make Lennie’s last few moments as peaceful as possible. Another example of Lennies death being an example of euthanasia would be because George made a promise. He promised Aunt Clara before she passed that he would always look after Lennie. This means that no matter how annoyed he got with Lennie, he would always stick up for him, and fight for him. Most people will not break any promises because it can hurt a relationship, so when George euthanized Lennie, it was because he cared about him, and didn’t want him to go out on a bad note. One last reason for why the death of Lennie was an example of euthanasia is because Lennie was almost like an animal that got too comfortable with humans. Every year in Africa many elephants and giraffes are euthanized because they get too comfortable around humans, putting the human species in danger. Lennie can be compared to these animals because he gets too comfortable around people such as Curley’s wife, or
