Do you believe that fear could hunt you or someone else? In the book Salt to the Sea, I believe fear has hunted multiple characters. Alfred Frick is scared of the responsibility of helping and fighting in WWII. Florian Beck is also being hunted by fear because he is constantly scared that Koch will find and catch him. Another character is Emilia Stożek, and she was scared when she became Latvian. Alfred Frick is scared of the responsibility of helping and fighting in WWII. I know this because when we first meet him in the book, he is hiding in a supply closet, not wanting to be found. This proves that he was hiding from his responsibilities. Alfred also tries to avoid helping the wounded soldiers by getting Joana to do it, again trying to hide from his responsibilities. We know this because he gets anxious when the blonde soldier tells him that he has contacted Koch. Another example was when he was worried that the luxury car that drove past the group on the way to Gotenhafen could be Koch. Lastly, Florian gets nervous at the thought of Koch waiting for him on the Wilhelm Gustloff ship, or even just on the dock. This thought really bothers him and he tries to reassure himself, but it doesn't really work. The last character is Emilia Stożek, and she was scared when she had to pretend to be Latvian. Emilia would become hesitant when she was asked to hand the guard her fake documents of the Latvian. Also, in order to pass as the Latvian she has to wear makeup, pull her hat down, and show her pregnant belly. Doing all of these things every time they are stopped could be a lot of pressure and fear. Lastly, at the end of the book, Alfred is acting delirious and so Emilia yells at him, but she yells in polish. She is in immediate fear for her life because Alfred also thought that she was
