In Antigone, Anouilh is able to showcase the ethical values of Antigone that come into play when Creon, the new ruler of Thebes, issues a royal decree prohibiting the burial of Polyneices, who he believes was a traitor. Antigone then defies the law of the injustice of her brother and buries him. Through the use of hyperbole, simile, imagery, and symbolism, Anouilh is able to portray the Antigone and Creon’s tension of going against authority. In doing so, Anouilh allows the reader to question the ethical dilemma with which Antigone is faced. Anouilh introduces Antigone as a serious and businesslike kind of woman.
The play initially begins with Antigone speaking with her sister, Ismene, about how she seeks assistance with a criminal act. Having her sister explain the faults in her plan, Antigone proceeded with the illegal burial of her brother. Civil disobedience is defined by “the refusal to comply with a law as a way of political protest”[2]. Antigone was protesting the political standpoint of the king with whom she believed to be wrong because he was not willing to comply with the rule of the gods. Civil disobedience will, for the majority of the time, lead to an uprising consisting of a relatively large number of people.
The concept of arguments and rebellion has always been sparked by religious based conflicts. What is morally right, what would the Gods or God want you to do, does your action fit into the laws made by the Gods, and so on. In stories, such as Sophie Scholl and Antigone, both protagonist have their actions woven based on the God’s law and what is right over the laws made by mere humans. One area Sophie Scholl expressed his characteristic of having her actions influenced by what God would want was in her conversation with Robert Mohr , an officer integrating her. Mohr goes on asking her why she committed the “crime” of accusing the Führer being wrong, her response was , “ I know no one, regardless of circumstance can pass diving judgment.”
A Celebration For The Gods Imagine a world where everyone does as they please and society has no order. Chaos would fill the planet and horrible downfalls will result because rules and laws help keep everything in order. The play Antigone written by Sophocles demonstrates a ruckus in society when King Creon decides to go against the order of the Gods and does not give the body of Polynices a proper burial for his own benefit. Antigone, the sister of Polynices, gets captured by Creon because of her actions of burying him, but after a great amount of persuasion Creon decides to set her free.
The choices we make sometimes can end up as an act of civil disobedience. In Sophocles disturbing drama. Antigone, she defies creon’s order and buries her brother, claiming that she honors the first law of the gods. As the defiant Antigone comes to realise that she is going to die she becomes heavy-hearted in results to hanging herself.
After exhausting all of her other options, Antigone resorts to violence. Creon throws her into jail and soon after, her soon-to-be husband Haemon discovers her “hanging with a noose of linen around her neck” ( Sophocles 246). Killing herself serves as a message to Creon that no rule of a man can go above the rule of the Gods. Whether the speaker’s “daddy” is her actual father or just men in general, she also uses violent imagery to prove her point.
The objective for the feminist movement is to find equality between the sexes. Since the start of this movement, women have acquired the right to vote and have become big competition for males throughout the workplaces. Even though the feminist movement has been big throughout the past 200 years, there are lots of examples in history that show characteristics of feminism. One of those examples is that show characteristics of feminism. One of those examples is the book Antigone by Sophocles.
In a symbolic manner, Creon also symbolises the suppression and tension that the older white generation is currently under and that are struggling with white guilt. He then supresses the new generation which in this adaptation would Antigone symbolises to be. Antigone, who represents the individual and the born frees, disagrees with Creon. Antigone as a born free, symbolises the new generation in South Africa that now have to face the issues of the result of the end of apartheid. Antigone stands up for her adopted brother proclaiming that he should be allowed to stay with them as he is part of the family and democracy has been instilled into South Africa for more than twenty
What I got from this is that when there is a tragedy the world wants you to move on, just like Creon said in the play “life goes on.” This was shown at the end when Creon continued throughout his days and duties even after his son and wife died. Another important theme that was talked about and explained well is “beauty is found within.” Antigone explains that she knows she’s ugly and that her father was also ugly. She said he became beautiful after what he was trying to accomplish was fulfilled.
Mistakes in Thebes In the classic play Antigone by Sophocles, two characters are established, Antigone and King Creon. When the two characters are juxtaposed due to Antigone being loyal to her family and Creon being loyal to his state leads to fatal consequences. The tragic hero depicted in the play is Creon due to the fact that he is a man of high noble power and his epic and tragic downfall is foreshadowed after the conflict between his rule and Antigone’s beliefs.
To the left of Creon, the scene of Antigone’s suicide is shown. Antigone is drawn with a noose around her neck with a despairing look on her face. This scene is one of the most tragic downfalls within the play. Throughout the story, many of the events are a result of the actions and decisions of Antigone. We placed her in the center of the stage to show how important her role was in the story.
The significance of this scene is that it is the end of the story and everyone starts to fall (die), and it shows how everyone fell apart. In Antigone Creon’s wife decides to kill herself, but Creon has no idea about this. The 2nd messenger goes to tell Creon this horrible news and the outcome isn’t that great. Creon realizes the mistake he made, and realized it was his fault that his wife is dead. Creon has the guards take him away while saying, “I don’t exist any more; I’m no one.
The Island is about two men who have been incarcerated in an unnamed prison, which is clearly based on Robben Island, the island that held Nelson Mandela captive for twenty-seven years. Each day, they are forced to do intense labour or run while they are shackled to each other, and each day, they treat each other’s wounds and practise for their upcoming concert performance. They choose to perform Sophocles’ tragedy, Antigone, which mirrors the conditions in South Africa, where despotic rulers eliminate all forms of opposition. The use of metadramatic elements in The Island alludes to the unjust apartheid system, and suggests that South Africa itself is a prison, and its people are its inmates, especially people of colour.
“She wailed out loud that sharp sound of bitterness a bird makes when she looks in her nest and it's empty, it's a widow's bed in the baby chicks are gone”(Sophocles 515-518) Sophocles uses a metaphor and imagery to compare Antigone to a bird as well as to emphasize Antigone's devotion to her brother. The metaphor used in this quote states, “She wailed out loud that sharp sound of bitterness a bird makes when she looks in her nest and it's empty”. the Sentry compares Antigone's cry to a bird’s to convey how distraught Antigone is to find her work undone the way a bird would be distraught to find their nest empty. the imagery used in the second half of the quote, “it's a widow's bed and the baby chicks are gone”, shows that Antigone prioritizes her brother over children or a husband.
Antigone 's thoughts are violently acknowledged to move the play forward, her decisions show how the law is unruly and unjust in governing the people. Sophocles uses the act of burial as a metaphor that is a tool of violence. Referring back to this particular scene, we understand that Ismene pleads with Antigone to also think of the dangers ahead but she refuses to listen to her (Sophocles [sa]:35). The act of thinking is known to be violent, just as stated previously, but it can bring about transformation and progression because it can bring change (Arendt
