Examples Of Foreshadowing In The Giver

1121 Words5 Pages

What would transpire if our leadership controlled every activity or left us in the dark about animals? What if we are told lies about our own history? How would that make us feel, as individuals, as a state, a nation, or as a globe? Through The Giver (by Lois Lowry), these components are straightforwardly shown to us by the actions of the protagonist, flashbacks, and foreshadowing. Flashbacks reveal to us the true disparity between our cultures, and they uncover the reality of their world with many memories. Foreshadowing establishes the truth about how the characters are feeling. Dystopias give warnings about things that might influence our lives later; some might be government regimes, animal cruelty, or familiarity with our history. Our …show more content…

Small children are given small Comfort Objects that are taken away at the age of 8. This could influence a whole nother paragraph but right now that is not what I am talking about. What really is the difference between our way of life and theirs is the fact that they don't have animals. Most kids go to zoos and parks, some families even have pets at home. But these kids don’t ever see animals, that's why it was such a shock to Garbriell and Jonas when Gabe called out, ‘"Plane! Plane!’" (172). Now not hearing the engine of a plane, "Terrified, he looked up, [and saw for himself ]... it was not a plane at all…It was a bird"(172). Both of them have never seen one most likely for the reason of Poaching. One day when Jonas was with the Giver for a lesson, he was given a terrible memory. It was a memorie of death and pain all things he never experienced before but now had seen what happens when people would Poach. Anguished he watched poachers "…hack the tusks from a motionless elephant on the ground and haul them away, spattered with blood" (100). Most places in our world poaching is illegalized as it harms animals ruthlessly with no real reason. Maybe in this world Poaching wasn’t illegalized and continued on until all or most animals were extinct from this location. This is why small kids like Lilly or even adults who are revivers don’t believe in the stories of animals. The night after Jonas got the memory of poaching he asked lilly, ‘"Did you know that once there really were elephants? Liveones?’’’ As Lilly had never seen something like this she was skeptical only responding with a "‘Right’… ‘Sure, Jonas.’" This truly shows what a state their society is in. Kids don’t believe in the stories of animals, Gabriell freaking out as he saw a bird, and Jonas encounters with Poaching all show how much these people are in the dark about animals past and present
