Many people do not know that freedom is more than just being legally free. In Douglass’ autobiography Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, after Frederick Douglass's owners death, he finds himself getting cruelly whipped by a man named Convey. When Douglass finally fights back, Convey leaves him alone. Freedom is the right to act, speak, and think whatever you have on your mind. Doesn’t matter what it might be, you are allowed to express yourself without criticism. Freedom is being more than just being legally free. Being free is having your own privacy of things, not just being legally free. Frederick Douglass was raised with no mother nor father on a Maryland plantation. In his early life he had witnessed unfair treatment of fellow slaves of his. Many of those slaves were relatives of his. There were rare instances of kindness he has witnessed. Which gave him a hunger for knowledge that was just as strong as the hunger of the underfed. Later when his previous owners died, he went to be a slave for a man by the name of Thomas Auld. “Thomas Auld was a cruel man who did not treat slaves good”. When Douglass was in power of Mr. Auld, Mr. Alud saw douglass as a liability and beat Douglass for minor things. After constant beatings Douglass “grabbed the farmer and threatened to kill Mr. Auld”. The plan failed when a slave betrayed the others and the all were arrested, but there was no evidence of their plan to escape. So douglass went back to the plantation. Douglass did want to have his freedom and did want to be away and not work for Mr. Auld. Douglass was tired of the unfair treatment he got, he thought that it was unfair that “he was not able to know his age but the white boys was about to know their age and birthday”.
