Throughout the violence and the dismantle of the institution I have learned that the relationship between a correctional officer and an inmate needs to be about giving and earning respect. The inmates are still humans, just humans that made bad decisions during a time in their life. The second thing I learned was that as a correctional guard, you need to be fully aware of your surroundings and not manipulate inmates. The guards were ignorant with their own power and did not notice when there was clear indication of a riot. This contributes to my understanding of the American prison system because it goes back to what we were taught as children, treat others how you want to be treated.
Furthermore, Police Officers are held to higher standards than others employed in public service because they alone have the power to limit individual freedom. Another effort to increase legitimacy with the citizens of Dallas is the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics and the Canons of Police Ethics that provides officers with a philosophical en ethical basis for the Dallas Police Department rules and regulations. The provisions of the Code of Conduct shall be observed by all members of the Department in order to maintain the confidence, respect, and support of the public. Police Legitimacy reflects on how the public perceives officers and what they can do to improve or erode those perceptions. In the city of Dallas, there is about one patrol officer for every thousand citizens, as a result, the impact that every single Dallas Police Officers makes on the citizens that we served represent the Police Department in general.
Also they serve and get involved with the community. N.Y.P.D police officers are held to the highest standard possible, so it is their job to set the example and remain sharp because that is what is expected from them.
Police officers are perceived as enforcers of the law and also the ones who protect society. When they carry out their line of duty, it is for the sake of the safety upon society, ensuring
A police officer is an employee of the government who has been given the duty to enforce the law by maintaining order and arresting lawbreakers. If I were to go into law enforcement then I would like to be the Social Agent, since the major duty of the police is to serve and protect the public; hence, I would be willing to combine with other typologies (Patterson, 2014). Actually, it is useful to have these typologies, as it will ensure that the public and the police officers get to understand that police officers can be different but their main aim is to serve the same purpose. The following are the reason why I feel it is good to have the typologies Typologies will enable me to create a good relationship to all people that includes both the
These officers should encourage the community to be more involved in the prevention of crime. This will also help all communities, not just the big cities, feel more confident and comfortable in the system that serves them. There is currently so much tension between the police and the
A news report released by CNN on April 10, 2015 displayed three examples of use of force abuse by on duty officers. Of these three incidents the results were a man dying in police custody after a dog allegedly mauled him, a mentally ill man being was shot dead after his family called police asking for help, and an officer who shooting into a vehicle after a car chase, killing a man who was initially suspected of drunk driving. Of all three incidents the deceased happened to all be Black men. Incidents like so have led to the formation of groups like Black Lives Matter. Instances such as these open up debate about if police are using excessive force based upon the suspect’s race.
Police Brutality stands as one of the most controversial political issues around the United States. This issue has existed throughout history with just one example being the Tompkins Square Riot in 1874. Police brutality relating to race still exists today with an arguably recent example being the Ferguson, Missouri riots which took place during 2014-2015. These examples are the result of stereotypical racial implications such as the separation between the white and black communities in more populated cities and even in smaller states. These separations and misunderstandings cause a negative impact on the police force.
They are put into place to avoid problems that are not necessarily against the law but are not behaviors people should be participating in. Ethical standards for law enforcement officials can include not taking any bribes or money from criminals who want to get out of a situation. This can include not taking money for traffic violations or drug convictions. While this behavior is illegal, it definitely also constitutes as unethical. The biggest reason lies behind the fact that if more police officers exhibit this type of behavior, then it will be more common for criminals to commit these crimes since nobody is being punished for
“Correction officers supervise convicted offenders when they are in jail, in prison, or in the community on probation or parole” (National Center for Victims of Crime, 2008). When a defendant is found guilty, they are usually sentenced to time in jail, houses of correction, prisons, probation, or parole. When they are sentenced to time in prison, it is the responsibility of corrections and their officers to ensure that the defendant is treated humanely. It is also their job to make sure that the correctional facility that is holding the offender is safe and secure.
It is easy to learn about a subject from a book, but it is an entirely different matter to learn about a subject through real life experience. I hope to learn how to serve and protect while implementing the law correctly, especially in today’s world when the level of support for police officers is very low and the level of misconduct cases concerning the police are very high. It is not easy to know what to do in every situation, especially when some reactions are needed with very little or no time to think about. It is one thing to hear about a crime happening and the response that would be best to give, and another thing to need
While it can be interpreted as standing for ones beliefs, a police officer must uphold a high moral code in accordance to the society which is being served. The ethics to which police officers holds themselves, must include the character traits demonstrated in personal life, in addition to operating as public servants. If an officer is deemed untrustworthy at home, they cannot be trusted to work legally within the police department. Honesty within policing is just as important, where failing to admit a mistake can weaken a reputation and call previous cases into question. Although these traits can be trained into an individual, integrity must be developed personally before it can be applied
Law Enforcement has a main reason in life, in why it exists and what exactly it does. It a main job in life, it helps keep people safe in the world today. Law enforcement helps keep criminals away and provides criminal justice. It has made many systems that have helped figure out those who committed crimes (“Law Enforcement” FBI). Many people ask themselves why the law enforcement exists.
‘’Most officers enter law enforcement with minimal experience in the field or in handling the moral dilemmas that officers typically encounter. They learn how to perform their jobs, as well as recognize the organizational norms, values, and culture, from their peers and supervisors. While supervisors provide direct, formal reinforcement, officers’ peers offer friendship and informal rewards that, in many cases, hold greater influence than official recognition from the agency’’ (Fitch, 2011). Officers who come across situations where they are unsure what is morally and ethically best to do often turn to their peers for assurance and guidance. Good ethical behavior can easily be influenced by officers and those in law enforcement.
One of the challenges includes job responsibilities and expectations. The law enforcement community and officers may have varying responsibilities when it comes to their jobs, missions as well as professional cultures with varying expectations in regards to the definition of bullying, what constitutes suitable response4s to bullying and the ways it can be prevented. Law enforcement officers and school personnel’s more often operate according to various rules. For instance, school officials have a set of school rules and codes to enforce while law enforcement officers must at all times uphold the law. Another challenge is negative perception.
