Grit and Mindset - Othello As individuals we all learn at different stages and go about situations in different ways. However, because some people are less exposed to easy growth and self perseverance they could in the long run be set back. A person who knows their worth and knows how to be gritty usually has an easier time going about life because they are more sure of themselves and their goals. However, it also takes the right mindset in order to fulfill one's desires. The combination of the two is what makes the strongest individuals. He is a very gritty person and he got influenced by Iago which caused him to developing a certain “fixed mindset”. In the beginning of the play, Othello is very on edge about his love to Desdemona. He won’t let anyone, (not even Desdemona’s father Brabantio) get in the way of their love. However throughout the play I believe Othello gets less and less Gritty. He begins to lose track of his goal due to him getting tricked by Iago. Instead of fighting for Desdemona and pushing for her, he beings to believe in this illusion of her that Iago is portraying. Slowly but surely Othello’s mindset changes throughout the play and he beings to develop a sort of “fixed mindset”. In the article written by Duckworth the following is stated, “…every human quality that has been studied has proven to be affected by a person's environment”, this quotes proves how we as humans are affected by the environment we find ourselves in. Therefore, knowing Othello was around Iago so much it is not that hard to picture why Othello began believing in Iago’s made up lies. In act 5 scene 2 Othello states, “I would not kill thy unprepared spirit. No, heavens forfend! I would not kill thy soul”, this quote was stated by Othello to Desdemona minutes before he took her life. Her world turned around when he began to accuse her of adultery yet she never left his side. She made the commitment to him to love him for better or for worse the day they got married and she let her mindset grow alongside his accusations. Instead of backing away she put major effort into proving her innocence to Othello. In Act 5 Scene 2 Desdemona says to Othello, “ And have you mercy too. I never did offend you in my life; never loved Cassio but with such general warranty of heaven as I might love. I never gave him token”. This quote shows how Desdemona really did fight to make Othello see that she had not offered herself to anyone else. This growth of mindset is not something easy for a person to overcome, yet she did.
