Final Paper
Throughout the play of Othello many characters had different mindsets and the way they displayed grit was also unique to each characters. One can say that each character had they own fair share of grittiness during the play. However I ultimately define mindset as a belief or beliefs that people have overtime that helps to shape the way they think. You can also say that grit is the determination to do something or achieve something. For example I can be characterized as a gritty person because when I'm determined to get something I will do my absolute best in order to do or achieve that particular thing. It's the willingness to get something done is what makes you a considerably gritty.

Because of his fixed mindset he lost out on my things that didn't seem reasonable to the many other characters in the play. For example when he fired Cassio because he slept with his wife Desdemona even though it wasn't completely Cassio’s fault. Even when Desdemona pleeded with him it didn't matter until he got tired of her talking about it. Act 3 scene 3 states “Desdemona: Shall’t be tonight at supper? Othello: No, not tonight. Desdemona: Tomorrow dinner, then? Othello: I shall not dime at home; I meet the captains at the citadel”(pg 121). Othello didn't care for Desdemona’s reasoning for what happened. He had strong and unreasonable mindset towards the situation even when Cassio tried to get back in his good graces. Othello didn't want to change his opinion of Cassio even though he was one of the best and most loyal lieutenant he have every had by his side. However Othello wasn't all bad because he did show key examples of grit during his roles in war against the Turks. He stepped up as the commander at a time of doubt and hopelessness to lead the people of Cyprus to victory against the Turks. Othello is considered as a powerful warrior of great stature and abilities that's determined to lead his people to green pastures. But because of his fixed mindset that statement would not always be …show more content…
For example the article “The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck”states “ You don't have to have one mindset or the other to be upset. Who wouldn't be? Things like poor grade or a rebuff from a friend or loved one - these are not fun events… Yet those people with the growth mindset were not labeling themselves and throwing up their hands. Even though they felt distressed, they were ready to take risks, confront the challenges and keep working at them” (pg 54). Even though he doesn't believe in Othello’s achievements he accepts it and seeks revenge on Othello by trying to take his wife from him. Unfortunately he is willing to take advantage of anyone in order to achieve his goals of revenge. Sadly because of his willingness to take advantage of anyone to accomplish his mission a lot of characters get caught in the crossfire. However one good thing that could be said about Iago is his grittiness to achieve his goals no matter how or what gets in the way. He even goes as far as lying to Othello to break the trust that he once had for the people around. Iago single handedly stopped Othello from feeling or being happy because he also feels the need to physically and mentally hurt Othello. Iago’s whole character is solely based on his determination to completely make Othello suffer for passing his position as lieutenant over to Cassio. For
