Hate is an overwhelming emotion that is an integral portion of society; expressed greatly in media such as literature. This emotion is additionally vital in a play written by William Shakespeare. A famous poet during the Elizabethan era, one of William Shakespeare’s plays entitled, Romeo and Juliet demonstrated the impact hatred has on the people it surrounds. In 2021 there were about 48,183 suicide cases. In modern times a man would never kill himself to be with his love. In 1597 William Shakespeare wrote a play about exactly that. Romeo and Juliet, two star crossed lovers born into different families had driven themselves to their death. Hate is what influences Romeo to kill himself.
Within the play of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare presents the idea of hatred as the main drive for the events that occur. The play is set in Verona which is where two posh families live the Montagues and the Capulets who hate each other and it’s been like this for many years. Through accidents the children of the families, Romeo and Juliet tragically lose their life’s but in replacement they end the hatred between the families. This shows us as the audience how strong the hatred is between the two families as it takes the life’s of their own children for them to stop this hatred.

Natalie Springer Frost English Honors 9-5 7 March 2023 A Harrowing Hostility The misfortune of Shakespeare's tragic play, "Romeo and Juliet," dawned from an old opposition, a senseless conflict, an ancient grudge whose origin has been lost to time. Its existence has disrupted the harmony of its home, and all are tired of it except the rival families themselves; at times, the families only seem to think of themselves. There is one fatal flaw that wounds the characters of this tale, whether physically or emotionally—and it is the feud itself.
“These violent delights have violent ends And in their triumph, die like fire and powder,” said Friar Laurence, in William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, before he married the two lovesick protagonists of the play (954). The two main families of the play share the same status of wealth and also express hatred for each other. The Capulets and Montagues are very wealthy and powerful and have sustained an ancient feud. This hatred caused much violence throughout the play, as the prologue interprets, “From ancient grudge break to new [violence]” (Shakespeare 901).
Hate is a curse that destroys all things. In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet are on opposite sides of a grudge between two families, and eventually, they kill themselves. Romeo and Juliet fall in love during the story, but ultimately hate is the main factor that drives Romeo to kill himself. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the feud between the Montague and Capulet houses can equivalate to a modern day sports rivalry, in the sense that nobody truly knows when either feud began, members of both sides of the rivalries refuse association with one another, and both feuds can lead to violence. For example, when setting the scene for the play, William Shakespeare describes the Montagues and Capulets by calling them “Two households, both alike in dignity/ From ancient grudge break to new mutiny.” (Romeo and Juliet prologue.1-3). By calling the relationship between the two families an ancient grudge, the play explains that the rivalry lacks a true beginning, and that continues to take place for generations and generations. This equates to the one hundred thirty year rivalry between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants, in the sense that there has been strife between both teams for longer than any single person has been alive, and that current incidents keep both rivalries stronger than ever.

Hate impacts society more than love because hate can affect people directly and indirectly. In Romeo and Juliet early on we learn that two families hate each other the Montagues and Capulets Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. Their families ancient grudge causes a downward spiral of death and sadness throughout the whole story and everybody is affected in a negative way because of the families grudge. In the story a young couple falls madly in love but their love is denied by multiple obstacles leading back to their families grudge. Romeo meets Juliet at a capulet party and they instantly fall in love not knowing each other is a part of their families rival.
