Heroes can be defined in many different ways. The best definition would be that a hero is a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds, and noble qualities (dictionary.reference.com/browse/hero). In almost every novel or story there is a hero and it typically tends to be the main character. Whether or not the main character is a hero or not can be hard to tell depending on the story or novel. In the book 1984 by George Orwell the main character being a hero is a matter of opinion because it depends on which way the reader interprets it. The book 1984 is about a country called Oceania whole is ruled and watched over by Big Brother. Big Brother is said to be everywhere and watching your every move. Winston did not have the mindset and it resulted in not only being defeated by his enemy, also loving his enemy. Winston in the beginning wanted to destroy Big Brother. Although he wanted to destroy Big Brother, he ended up not succeeding. An example of Winston not succeeding is, “Do not imagine that you will save yourself, Winston, however completely you surrender to us. No one who has once gone astray is ever spared. And even if we chose to let you live out the natural term of your life, still you would never escape from us.”(Orwell 256). Winston’s fate was completely in control of Big Brother or in other words Winston is defeated and unsuccessful. An example of Winston loving Big Brother is, “But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother” (Orwell 298). With that being said in the book, Winston not only gave into big brother but he considered it a victory to love Big Brother. It was considered a victory because Winston was too weak to deal with the struggle. From the beginning Winston knew that he was eventually going to endure difficult times if he was caught. So when the time came to endure the struggle, he crumbled. Winston became like all the other citizens of Oceania who are not able to think for themselves, are completely controlled by Big Brother, and also loves Big Brother. To be a hero, you need to be willing to suffer and go through extremely difficult times to become
