Everyone was offended by something that was written in the book which made burning the books seem reasonable. “Colored people don’t like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people don’t feel good about Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Burn it. Someone’s written a book on tobacco and cancer of the lungs? The cigarette people are weeping? Burn the book.” (Bradbury 57) If all the books are burned, then there is no possibility that anyone will be offended by a book. With people reading less, they think less which decreases the amount of debates and arguments. It also establishes peace. Books were also burned in order to make everyone feel equal. “The word intellectual became the swear word it deserved to be. Surely you remember the boy in your own school class who was exceptionally bright, did most of the reciting and answering while the others sat like so many leaden idols, hating him. And wasn’t it this bright boy you selected for beating and tortures after hours?” (Bradbury 55) Without books to educate the young minds, there will not be one student that is smarter than everyone else. All students and children will be equally educated. The final and most important reason is that when books are burned, knowledge and imagination is gone. Without books, there is a lack of ideas and knowledge, and it is easier for the government to take control. Lack of knowledge enables ignorance and ignorance creates people who are easier to control. Books can also represent free thinking and hold an enormous amount of power. Books pose a threat to the government, so the government try to burn all the books in order to keep control of the people. A book is dangerous because it makes us think and question our life and society. The government is not able to control what conclusions the public may come to after reading a book so they burn all books to prevent this from happening.
