Armando Lopez Williams English I 24 February 2023 Odysseus A True Epic Hero Odysseus is a true epic hero showing his heroic qualities in the book The Odyssey. Trying to get back home Odyssues had to travel for 20 years going on adventures to get pushed back constantly. Odysseus is a hero because he shows Strength, Intelligence and patience while dealing with difficult situations.
Odysseus was a man who showed great courage and intelligence throughout The Odyssey. Going through the twenty long years of fighting battles that no ordinary man could, he showed signs of perseverance, leadership, bravery, and concern for his crew. Against his will, he was thrust into a series of multiple voyages and adventures that could have killed him and his men, but he fought his way home. On these adventures, Odysseus always put others first and outwitted enemies that were far more powerful than he was. Showing signs of bravery, he always stood up to the fight, and never failed to meet a challenge.
Odysseus is an epic hero in The Odyssey and goes through many trials throughout his adventure. The hero faces many monsters, creatures, and mythological beings on his journey back to Ithaca. Brave Odysseus shows many traits of being a normal man on a mission, but also shows traits of an epic hero. He shows more traits of being an epic hero, simply because of his quick ideas and courage shown throughout the terrifying journey.
The first epic hero characteristic that Odysseus shows is his bravery. The first way he shows bravery is when he tells his men about the prophecy of their journey home and how he has to listen to the siren’s song alone for them to be safe. " she urged that I alone should listen to their song therefore you must tie me up. " 783.

To start, Odysseus shows traits of being an epic hero because he is a vast traveler, a great warrior, a national hero, faces supernatural foes, receives supernatural help, and lastly is capable of deeds of great strength and courage. To add on, Odysseus is a vast traveler because he has traveled to lots of different islands such as, Troy for the Trojan war, Kalypso’s island, Cyclops island, the Lotus Eater island, Circe’s home, the underworld, and many more. He shows bravery and courage when going to the underworld to help is crew turn back from pigs into humans. “The Odyssey” points out that, “Odysseus rushes to save his men from the enchantress” (Homer 15). Moreover, it was said that Odysseus went to Circe’s home to rescue his crew but Circe wouldn’t give his crew back unless he went to the underworld for a prophecy, which Odysseus did because he did not want to leave his crew behind if he could save them.
During Odysseus’s journeys, while trying to find his way back home, he goes through many adventures showing off these characteristics of a hero.
