As someone once said, “A hero is someone who steps up when everyone else backs down.” Thus, this quote means that really a hero is someone who doesn’t quit when things get tough, instead stand up and take the role. Without a doubt, both Darry Curtis and Dallas Winston, from the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton are heroes. Undoubtedly, there are many types of different heroes that put themselves above others. A true hero will demonstrate selflessness when it is in need. For example, the Military risk their lives to not only protect our country and the civilians but also they fight for our rights so that we don’t have unfair restrictions. They give up their lives, family, and friends for the good of others, they stepped up when no-one else was willing to. Another example that is less thought of are people who raise charity or do volunteer. Those people give up their time and hard earned money to help others who are less fortunate. He took the blame without batting an eye even though he knew he was not to blame. Dally put Two-Bit above himself which shows true selflessness. Also, when Johnny Cade killed Bob the soc, both Johnny and Ponyboy Curtis went to Dally for help. Instead of turning them away, he chooses to take control and give them directions to an abandoned church where they can hideout.
