Throughout the play of Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, the various themes are brought to light through the use of imagery. Imagery means to create an image in the mind of the reader, which pertains to the their senses, through the use of symbolism, and metaphors. Within Macbeth we come across many such quotes that have a literal meaning, but also reveal a certain theme. One of the many themes highlighted within Macbeth is that things are not always what they seem to be. There are many ways this theme is displayed, for example, through the very dynamic character of Lady Macbeth. Shakespeare communicates the theme of outward appearances can be deceiving on many instances in the play of Macbeth. With the help of blood imagery, are able to see how at the very end of the play Macduff says “ Tell thee, Macduff was from his mother's womb untimely ripped”(5,8,15-16). Earlier in the play, the witches had prophesied that no man born of a woman would be able to defeat Macbeth. Macbeth had thought that he was invincible, because everyone is born from a woman, but now he was able to realize, that although Macduff has a mother, she did not birth him, he was born by Cesarean section. The outward meaning of the prophecy had fooled Macbeth into thinking that he was invincible, but now he realizes what the witches had tricked him, and that Macduff has the power to kill him.
