The purpose of imagery and symbolism is to help allow readers to visualize and better understanding of the text. Many mistaken the two Imagery and Symbolism as a picture or representation (symbol/image). The two can be viewed as the same, but they aren't quite the same. Imagery is a character's five senses, which helps brings out their emotions/feelings, thoughts, and tone of the story. The use of symbolism is to represent ideas and concepts, usually a setting that is unknown. Unknown settings can lead to other literary devices like foreshadowing danger. The author concludes such literary devices to emphasize the story and the role that a character play. Here are some examples in Macbeth's Act 5, Scene 1. Lady Macbeth sees blood on her hands. When Macbeth flees to England, Lady Macbeth starts acting unusual. Lady Macbeth's gentlewomen complains to Lady Macbeth's doctor about her past two episodes of sleepwalking, and talking about the blood on her hands. Lady Macbeth has her eyes wide open but is experiencing sleepwalking and hallucinations, she keeps rubbing her hands together which signifies her washing the blood off her hands. Lady Macbeth speaks on anything she does won't help remove the smell of blood, even if she used perfumes of Arabia, a strong fragrance. The quote I provided is a great example of imagery, because as a reader, I pictured an image of Lady Macbeth washing her hands, and I imagined the smell of blood. The author, Shakespeare his motive is to get readers to imagine the important details, and emphasizing the importance of the scene.
