A society is people living in a community who have the same morals, beliefs, and traditions. People recognize others by what they wear, what they eat, how they act, and how they treat others. However, society isn’t about those few things, it’s about that one person that is willing to follow someone else as they step out of the so called ‘society’. In The Crucible, religion dominated society. People were expected to lead a pure life and if they didn't they would face a cruel punishment. The society was surrounded completely by Puritan beliefs. The Puritans believed in society as a whole not individuality. For example, when John Proctor decides to not sign his name he went outside 0f the Puritan beliefs and became his own individual. He showed everyone that it was okay to stand up for what you believe in. In today’s society individuality is a big part of the world. If someone decided to not stand up for what they believe in it would be considered odd. Although, in The Crucible, everyone knew everyone else’s business because their …show more content…

When George and Lennie first arrived at the ranch they didn't mention anything about Lennie’s disabilities because they were afraid they might not be able to work on the ranch. Society conducted them to lie in order to work, which is a lot different from today. Most jobs will allow anyone to work or there are jobs that are meant for people with disabilities. Another example is later on in the book Lennie breaks Curley’s wife’s neck and proceeds to run away, but, instead of everyone thinking about his disabilities they automatically want to shoot Lennie for something he accidentally did. Lennie never realized or remembered how strong he was until it was too late. However, it didn't matter that he had disabilities because society conducted everyone to only look at the bad in someone.
