Tom Robinson is innocent. Still, the system will never see it that way because they can not see past Tom’s skin color, not only Tom but many people in the African American community. The Story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is set in the town of Maycomb Alabama in the 1930s, in this story, a black man named Tom Robinson is accused of raping a young white woman Mayella Ewell, Mayella and her family are well-known for being “trashy” they still hold a higher status than Tom just because of their skin color, this shows how unfair the system is, and even though supporting Tom and defending a black man would make him look bad and ruin his reputation Atticus Finch was determined to help Tom and prove he is innocent. Instead of looking at the facts and seeing that there is so much more evidence that he was not the one who raped and beat Mayella, there was enough evidence to see that it could have been easily been her father Bob Ewell who beat her and forced her to blame Tom. Just because Tom is a black man does not mean he is a bad person, for example in To Kill a Mockingbird it states “ Which gentleman, we know is in itself a lie a black man as Tom Robinson’s skin, a lie I do not have a point to you. You know the truth and the truth is this: Some N***** lie, some N***** are immoral, and some N**** men are not to be trusted around women- black or white. But this is the truth that applies to the human race and no particular race of men. There is not one person in this courtroom who has never told a lie, who has never done an immoral thing, and no man is living who has never looked upon a woman without desire.” ( Lee
