As a young child, my dad use to beat all of us if 1 person did something wrong and we knew about the situation and didn’t tell on them. Kambili, the main character in P.H., also experience the feeling of getting beat when someone did wrong or she did wrong by her father. In the story Purple Hibiscus the author Chimamanda NGozi adichie gives background story on Eugene, Beatrice, Jaja, and Kambili. Eugene beat his family every chance he got and Beatrice got pregnant many times, but Eugene killed the babies. Beatrice wanted to leave with Kambili and Jaja, but she didn’t know how to leave. She got so fed up, she killed Eugene by poisoning him, but Jaja took the blame and went to jail for Beatrice. The Roman poet Horace once wrote, “ Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” In Purple Hibiscus, Adichie utilizes the character Kambili to prove this idea to be true, that Kambili actually has made love for someone she never knew she would get.

Kambili and mama went to go see Jaja in jail. On page 299 it says, “Jaja will not talk to me about his incident spit in the guards face which is not like him.” Kambili is worried about Jaja being in jail because he is not himself, which proves Horace quote is true because she has developed feelings that she hasn’t developed before.
