Being stuck in a labyrinth can feel frustrating with nowhere else to run. You may
feel like you're going in circles, repeating the same patterns and facing the same
challenges over and over again. In a life labyrinth, it can be difficult to know which
direction to take or which choices to make. In the Book “Looking for Alaska” Alaska feels
trapped in a labyrinth because she watched her mother die and she is haunted by her
mother’s death, believing that the tragedy was her fault for not calling 911 to save her. She
blames herself (as does her father) for her mother’s death so she struggles to find a way

For example, She tried to escape her suffering through drinking. In
Chapter 29 she states “ Yeah. I was a little kid. Little kids can dial 911. They do it all the
time. Give me the wine, she said, deadpan and emotionless. She drank without lifting
her head from the hay.” Alaska is not as emotionless as she tries to appear. She tries to
hide her pain through drinking alcohol because it can temporarily numb emotional pain
and help her escape from negative feelings. Drinking and acting reckless affected Alaska
because it led to her to do bad things like almost getting expelled from school when she
got caught at night driving off campus with a bottle of wine in the car to meet her
boyfriend jake. Besides the suffering Alaska feels that she needs to escape, Alaska also
feels homeless in a state that it makes it difficult for her to stay emotionally happy which
is why in the book She's so bipolar and has so many mood swings. Bipolar disorder can
cause sudden shifts in emotions and behaviors that can be difficult to control or manage.
This can lead to feelings of frustration, confusion, and even self-destructive behavior.
