There can be no law to which obedience is optional, no command to which the state attaches an “if you please.”” (Leibman). The article continues on about respectful citizenship and how civil disobedience can be dangerous and destructive and will lead to disrespect. However, the definition of civil disobedience states that it is done peacefully and not destructively, and that they will accept the punishment.
For instance one type of peaceful resistance would be Martin Luther King Jr. This is a man who we all know was one of the most peaceful protest leaders in the United States. Now when you think about the things Martin Luther King said in most of his speeches he always expressed peace and never wanted his protest to promote violence while promoting his point.. Martin Luther King himself said “The time is always right to do what is right” (Martin Luther King Jr) and what he believed to be was for him to lead people into a peaceful protest against discrimination and racism.
Admittedly, this type of protest can be argued to show the utmost respect for the law. As Carl Cohen wrote in 1971, “Realizing that the law he breaks applies to him, the civil disobedient violates it knowingly in an effort to correct what he believes to be a wrong infinitely worse than the one he commits, and thereby to improve the system of laws” (Cohen). Such was certainly the case a few years earlier with the Civil Rights activists led by Martin Luther King, Jr., who held law and democracy in high regard. Back in the day laws weren’t always correct and many weren’t all that logical. Our first amendment right to protest became one of the biggest, and most effective methods in fighting injustices. In the past, however, the peaceful resistances fought for equal rights in the workplace, politics and society. Today, peaceful protests against laws and political decisions negatively affect the society such as the election and inauguration of President Trump and many of his executive decisions sparked protests and social media speculations impacted society negatively. In our bustling lifestyle today people are often distracted by technology, self-interest, or maybe they just don't have any interest at all. Civil Disobedience is known as breaking the law because you don 't agree with a certain law or have a peaceful protest about that law or what you believe in. An example would be when Mahatma Gandhi walked miles to the Indian ocean as the citizens gathered more and more to fight for there Indian Independence. This occasion was called the Salt March. The reason for The Salt March was a March were all the citizens from India walked with gandhi to fight back for their Independence from the British, since it was taken away from the British.
Peaceful Resistance no matter what way you look at it, it 's still going against someone whether it involves words or actions, resistance still causes more conflict. The last 5 years we have had people say they want change through these “peaceful protest” but these peaceful protests have done nothing but turn to violent riots were theirs damage to vehicles, business families rely on destroyed, bystanders hurt, officers killed and our country torn apart. Back when Martian Luther King Jr was around and he had his Peaceful Resistance or rallies for equality, they were peaceful and brought our country together with something that needed to be changed, but the protest we’ve had the last 5 years… he would be ashamed of. First going along with what I said about there being “peaceful rallies” even though some people may be at these rallies to make a difference to support their opinion, not everyone can respect that.
