Leadership Styles in The Health Care Setting

Leadership styles in the healtcare setting vary from facility to facility but it has an importance on the quality of nursing care given. Nursing management seem to utilize three different leadership styles such as autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire. With pros and cons to each leadership style, these are targeted to affect adequate patient care. These styles are applied to ensure the quality of nursing care provided by the staff is adequate to meet patient satisfaction. Utilizing effective prioritization and delegation from the nursing staff is also contributed to overall quality care for patients in healthcare.

Delegation can be described as the nurse assigning a task to a staff member within their scope of practice and being preformed in a timely and appropriate manner. Over delegating of care can be defined as assigning another staff member a task that isn’t in their job description, which can lead to unsafe patient outcomes. Crevacore can contribute to this by addressing, “Care can be overlooked, repeated, or inappropriately preformed which may impact the patient’s safety, experience and health outcomes" (Crevacore 886). Underdeligation of care can be explained as not utilization any of your resources to complete tasks from other staff members who are also capable of preforming that task under their scope of practice. Crevacore can agree with this by stating, “When there is a lack of understanding the nursing assistants role and scope of practice, it prevents the RN from working to their full scope of practice so they are reluctant to deligate to the nurses assist. This results in an overworked RN and an underworked nurse assistant" (Crevacore 889). Improper delegation of care is explained as assigning a task to a staff member that is out of their scope of practice that can be potentially harmful.
