Expanding on Burns’ distinctions, Bass (1995) asserts that “Transforming leaders convert followers to disciples…and provide followers with a cause around which they can rally” (p. 467).
Transformational leadership is a nursing leadership theory most suited to solving communication issues that can result in increased nurse retention rates, team unity, and decreased morbidity and mortality. Collectively nurses can advocate for improved health care policies to make a difference in practice and patient care
Leadership has many definitions. Chin, Desormeaux, and Sawyer (2016) define leadership as a relationship between followers and a leader with the intent to promote change through a mutual vision. Therefore, leaders are active influences in the outcome of organizations, through their decision-making, strategies, and influence on followers (Dinh et al., 2014). Additionally, in the nursing context, it has been documented that a leader 's style plays a factor in patient outcomes (Fischer, 2016). Indeed, in an ever-changing, complex health care environment, nursing leadership has become a crucial factor in managing challenges and maintaining patient safety (Fischer, 2016).
Clinical nurse leaders are trained to look at the big picture of the patient 's care (Rankin 2015). He or she evaluates patient care from admission to home transition, and everything in between. Whether it be care at the bedside with the clinical nurse, collaborating with other colleagues, or taking on a social worker 's perspective, "the use of the clinical nurse leader role can have marked impact on current healthcare" (Rankin 2015). Transformational Leadership in Nursing Introduction Transformational Leadership is the moral ability of a person to make sound judgment and wise decision to influence and inspire others to perform the best outcome even in the critical situation. It is the ability to guide others not just in words, but also by example. Nurses are able to cultivate trust and harmony and establish good relationship with their patients and co-workers through effective and constant communication and intervention. They respond to the basic needs and expectation (Rousel, 2011), they set aside their personal interest for the benefit of their patients and the organization.
TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP Transformational Leadership is defined as leadership style focused on effecting revolutionary change in organizations through a commitment to the organization’s vision. (Sullivan & Decker, 2001) Transformational leaders are usually given higher position and are known for their charismatic sense and ability to develop high visions and regards in the work they do. They often give their best performances due to the low morale or self esteem Example: Steve Job, Bill Gates and Ratan Tata. As the existentialist rightly said, we always have a choice, in doing what we already have done or doing that which we have never done.
Transformational Approach Transformational leadership style work towards high levels of communication from a management to meet goals. Leaders are meant to motivate employees and augment productivity and efficiency through communication and high visibility. This style of leadership really does need the involvement of management to meet goals. Leaders focus on the big picture within an organization and delegate smaller tasks to the team to accomplish goals. Transformational leadership proves to be efficient not only in business, but in all other sectors where it is used.
A transformational leader helps motivate people, becomes a role model for followers, and inspires people to look beyond their self-interest and to raise follower’s interest in the project. Transformational leaders set a more challenging expectations and since they set a high expectation they achieve a higher performance. Transformational leadership starts with developing the vision, it is a view of what might happen in the future that will excite followers. A leader might develop this. The next step after developing the vision is to sell the vision.
Criticism of transformational leadership whereby conceptual clarity are lacked . This is due to it had a broad range of activities and characteristics including vision creating , trust building and so on . Research shown that the components of transformational leadership are overlapping and undefined dimensions . Secondly , transformational leadership are measured whereby there are distinct factors with one another . Some of the transformational factors are not interrelated with transactional and laissez-faire factors .
Different people have different opinions on the concept of leadership. In the transformational leadership model, leaders set direction and help themselves and others to do the right thing to move forward. To do this they create an inspiring vision, and then motivate and inspire others to reach that vision. Being a good leader not only requires a lot of experience, knowledge, skills and acting efficiently, but also requires transparency, accountability and being ethical.
