Leadership and staffing are recognized as important factors for quality of patient care. A positive work environment will increase job satisfaction and staff retention. After interviewing Christine Smith, I believe her leadership style would be labeled as a consensus manager, which is the most transformative leadership style, and is shown to have a positive influence on the quality of patient care. She allows her employees to offer input before making a decision and encourages team decision making (Castle & Decker, 2011). Staffing problems can arise because of poor delegation skills or failure as a leader to respond appropriately to budget factors and patient demographics (Thompson, 2012). Identifying truths from different viewpoints is important for conflict resolution to be managed sensitively. Trust is the foundation of effective relationships, high trust environments have a positive effect with staff engagement, commitment, and organizational success (Sherman, 2012). Handling conflicts in an efficient and effective manner results in patient safety and improved staff morale (Johansen, 2012). Resolution of conflicts in the workplace is essential to a healthy work environment, breakdown in communication can lead to increased patient errors. The nurse manager approaches this challenge thoughtfully as it involves working relationships that are critical for the team to function collaboratively (Johansen, 2012). Patient safety, satisfaction, and the quality of the care they received in the unit are top priorities in health policy.
