Love, by definition, is feeling a deep affection for someone or something. Longing for love is a natural desire. The feeling of being loved is naturally something people crave. People strive to feel accepted and assured of themselves. Love, however, is just a feeling. Love can be compared to heart monitors. The monitor shows an increase or decrease depending on how strong or weak a heart rate is. Certain situations can cause a higher heart rate, and others drive the heart rate to lower. The same goes for love. Certain days, moods, problems, and fights can affect the love shown or felt. This constant daydreaming can lead to neglecting friendships and feelings of regret. When someone focuses only on finding a relationship, their friendships may become a second thought. Gatsby's obsession with Daisy affects his friendships and his hospitality negatively. "As soon as I arrived I made an attempt to find my host, but the two or three people of whom I asked his whereabouts stared at me in such an amazed way, and denied so vehemently any knowledge of his movements..." (Fitzgerald 34). Nick's narration of the story depicts that Gatsby is commonly unfindable and does not host parties for any reason other than in hopes of Daisy appearing. People consumed with finding love may have feelings of regret due to missed opportunities. Young modern readers can learn and reflect on the mistakes of Daisy and Gatsby. If Daisy had waited for Gatsby to become the man he claimed he could be for her, she would not have married Tom. Whether they have experienced divorced parents or know someone who has struggled with the repercussions of a split household, readers can relate to the feeling of a mistimed relationship. Daisy sought the feeling of acceptance rather than longing for pure love. She settled for Tom when her heart lay on Gatsby. Daisy and Tom's relationship was not love.
