The Great Gatsby is a love story with twists and turns that don’t end well for people. Readers also learned what wealth can do to a person and the difference between old wealth and new wealth. Through the character of Daisy Buchanan, Fitzgerald shows readers how money and wealth can cause people to be dishonest and lose their morals since they have a cushion of money beneath them. After they found Gatsby's dead body Nick wanted to call Daisy to tell her cause he believes she loved him. That was true but she loves money more. He called and the butler answered saying they had left that afternoon and didn’t leave an address to where they are going. This just shows how Daisy craves money more than love or anything else she has to have money and materialistic things. She wants love too but if there's a decision between love and money she goes with the money. That’s why she went with Tom that afternoon because Tom could provide the money she wanted. “I called up Daisy half an hour after we found him, called her instinctively and without hesitation. But she and Tom had gone away early that afternoon, and had taken baggage with them” (Fitzgerald 164). The quote above is telling readers how after Gatsby was murder Nick wanted to call Daisy know their affair was going on. When Nick called the butler answered and said Daisy and Tom had left with bags that afternoon. They left no address or number to reach them. Nick was surprised when he heard this because he thought Daisy had loved Gatsby which was true but she always loved the thought of Gatsby’s money more than she loved Gatsby himself.
