Martin Luther King Jr. Took A Stand by fighting for african americans to be free, have equal rights and to stop racism against them. He was Taking a Stand because he knew racism was wrong and unfair and he wanted to put an end to it. Before Martin Luther King Jr. took a stand, african americans were being discriminated against and it was wrong because they didn’t have the same rights as other people did. Martin Luther King Jr. started the civil rights movement and took a stand by marching in Selma for the right to vote. This was significant in history because Selma led to the passing of The Voting Rights Act that helps black people vote without having to deal with all the unusual laws that stopped many from voting. African americans were discriminated against strictly because of their race and had limited rights compared to other people. They were very restricted because of their race. Some examples would be segregation, limited utilities and education, and they had to give up their seats on buses for white people. …show more content…

Martin Luther King Jr. was looked up to by many, was a leader in the Civil Rights Act, and led Selma. Jimmie Lee Jackson lit a spark in many after his death due to police brutality against african americans. Hosea Williams and John Lewis led the march in Selma while Martin Luther King Jr. was busy. In the article Selma To Montgomery March it states,“ In the ensuing melee, a state trooper shot Jimmie Lee Jackson, a 26-year-old church deacon from Marion, as he attempted to protect his mother from the trooper’s nightstick. Jackson died eight days later in a Selma hospital. In response to Jackson’s death, activists in Selma and Marion set out on 7 March, to march from Selma to the state capitol in Montgomery”.
