Literary criticisms are something that are very important in the world today so people can view writing in many different ways and from different points of view. There are many important literary criticisms that are known about but the primary three that are used are: Reader-Response criticism, Marxist criticism, and the Lesbian & Gay criticism. All of these criticisms are used to talk about some aspects of the book, and movie The Great Gatsby. All of these criticisms are compared to The Great Gatsby in the book by Lois Tyson, Critical Theory Today. All of the principles, and tenets are talked about in depth in the text by Tyson, The Great Gatsby has aspects of all of the literary criticisms tied into the story, characters, etc. Marxist criticism is a literary criticism that mainly concentrates on the material conditions of life. The Marxist criticism asks many questions about a sample of text. Some of the main questions are “What characters or groups control the economic means of production?”, “What characters are oppressed, and to what social classes do they belong?”, “Whose story gets told in the text?”, and “Who is the audience?”. All of these questions allow the reader to analyze the text and see it from Marx’s point of view. The Great Gatsby is a book that is very popular to be analyzed by all of the different methods of literary criticism. The Marxist criticism relates to The Great Gatsby by pointing out the consumers, and the unfair privilege. The consumers of the movie are all of the characters portrayed in the book.
