Is Maturity Dependent on Age? Ziad K. Abdelnour once said, “Maturity comes with experience, not age.” Society is accustomed to the ideal that one’s sensibility is dependent on age, while wisdom has no correlation to how old one may be. Maturity is contingent on a person’s upbringing, mindset, and life experiences. It is a common opinion that a person’s knowledge is reliant on how old they are, but contrary to popular belief, one’s wisdom is dependent on the circumstances they grew up around. We gather our beliefs and tendencies from what we learn from those around us, so even a child can obtain a level of maturity that an older person cannot. For example, in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, the readers can see that Jem and Scout show immense maturity even though the are mere children. The book is set in the town of Maycomb, Alabama, a town that is infected with prejudice, but because of their father Atticus, the children are immune to the hatred that exudes from the townspeople. All too often, humans tend to put themselves above all else, refusing to take the backseat, but a true mature attitude is found when one is compassionate, selfless, and mindful of others. My family is a crazy tightly wound knot of love and I’ve learned so many valuable lessons from them. Among those, my beautifully gentle grandmother taught me one that found great resonance within me.
