To make matters worse, on top of the workload, they had to withstand many different multitudes of torture and pain given to them if their work was not finished properly or if they lagged behind. Another part that I found most interesting about this chapter were the sections in which they described the slave to slave-masters relationship as anything but hostile. On many occasions it was explained that slaves were treated as children, which though I realize is very demeaning in some instances, still surprised me, especially in Frederick Douglass’s case. His first masters wife, Sophia Auld, truly seemed to look at him and, at least in the beginning, even treated him as one of her own. It’s possible that this friendliness was due to the fact that Frederick was most likely the product of a slave and her own husband, but it still baffled me.
In this part of Frederick Douglass’ autobiography Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, he details the lives of the slaves on his master’s twenty plantations. He talks about what provisions they were given each month and the amount of clothes they received. In this chapter he writes, “The children unable to work in the fields had neither shoes, stockings, jackets, nor trousers, given to them…” (Douglass 6). Here, Douglass illustrates the cruelty that each slave endered with basic necessities.
Douglas spent a year with Covey, during which he was frequently and brutally whipped. Having spent considerable time in the city, Douglass was not familiar with farm instruments and techniques. Douglass arrives at Covey’s farm on January 1, 1833, and he is forced to work in the fields for the first time. For his first task he had to fix an oven. Douglass failed fixing the oven so, Covey orders him to take off his clothes and receive punishment. Covey often works in the fields with his slaves. Douglass recalls that he spent his hardest times as a slave during his first six months rented to Covey.
When Douglass was a child on Lloyd’s farm, he was not yet subjected to hard labor like the older slaves, and he even made friends with his master’s son, which gave him small benefits. Despite this, he was still subject to the cold and hunger, as slaves were not given proper meals or clothing. Children on the plantations were given cornmeal mush as food, and the linen clothing he was given was useless against the cold. In order to stay somewhat warm at night, Douglass stole a small back from the mill and slept with his head and upper body inside of it. When he was around seven or eight, Douglass was moved from Lloyd’s plantation to Mr. Hugh Auld, who lived in Baltimore.
His mother, Harriet Bailey, was a woman of great intellect who was the only slave in the area that was able to read and write. Douglass’ mother worked in a different plantation, so he only saw her four or five times during the first seven years of his life. To visit her son, Harriet would have to travel twelve miles to where Douglass was and then twelve miles back. The only way she was able to make such a trip was after a day’s worth of work so she would be able to arrive by the evening and leave before dawn.

This is how Douglass and other slaves destroyed the American slave system. First, along the long road to freedom Douglass and other slaves experienced a lot of physical harm done to them. The text states, “She was a field hand, and a whipping is the penalty of not being in the field at sunrise.” This means that the owners thought it was ok to beat their slaves when they are doing most to all their work. Also, the book says, “I was not so terrified and horror-stricken at the sight, that I had myself in a closet.”
Douglass encountered multiple harsh realities of being enslaved. For example, the ex-slave was practically starved to death by his masters on multiple occasions. In fact, “[He was] allowed less than a half of a bushel of corn-meal per week, and very little else... It was not enough for [him] to subsist upon... A great many times [he had] been nearly perishing with hunger” (pg 31).
The slaves knew he was not fit to be a master, instead of calling him master, they called him by his name (54). Unlike Auld, Mrs. Hugh did not fail in being cruel to her slave, Douglass. At first, she was kind-hearted towards him and was teaching him how to read, but that sudden change. In fact, treating him like a brute become her goal and success. She was influenced by her husband who told her it was unsafe in teaching Douglass how to read [forbidden] and treated like a human because it would jeopardize him being killed or a runaway slave (39-40).
Douglass compares slaves to horses: "By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their ages as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters
