Obstacles to Equal Opportunities Institutional racism refers to the ways in which discriminatory beliefs, attitudes, and practices are built into the structures and policies of various institutions, such as schools, workplaces, and the criminal justice system. These discriminatory practices often result in unequal treatment and unequal access to resources, opportunities, and benefits for certain groups of people, particularly people of color and other marginalized communities (Griffiths & Keirns, 2015). The impact of institutional racism can be seen throughout American society, from disparities in income and wealth to unequal access to quality education and healthcare to racial profiling and police brutality.
