Have you ever thought of being put into another person’s body or perhaps another animal? In the book Eva, by Peter Dickinson, Eva is put into a chimpanzee’s body after a terrifying accident. Throughout the book many ideas are repeated and developed which is also known as a theme. Many different themes are shown throughout the book but “Overzealous media” and “What is personage?” are much demonstrated. Overzealous media is showing too much enthusiasm in getting media which is usually to entertain the public and Eva is just the topic that would amuse the world. An example of overzealous media can be found soon after Eva arrives at the apartment."The doorbell was ringing now without stopping. People were banging at the door itself. Nevertheless, Eva is just another person in a chimpanzee’s body but she is not treated like a normal human but instead she is treated like a thing. Humans are owned to themselves and have their own rights but in Eva’s case it is much different. The quote “Eva’s company had no assets except Eva herself, and she was highly valuable. The legal question of whom she belonged to was still unresolved” (Dickinson 148) shows how she does not belong to herself but instead a company. Eva is treated like an object because she is seen as a chimp and chimps do not have personage but if Eva had personage she would not be owned by a company but instead herself. Another example of the theme “What is personage?’”is shown when Eva is at the conference with Joan, the silky man, and reporters. Eva states how she is glad that Joan saved her life but she knows that Kelly had to suffer. Eva says “You're just another monkey, remember” (Dickinson 143). This quote represents the theme personage because humans have the right to kill other animals but it is wrong to kill another human. Eva states how humans are just monkey but they still have the rights to kill Kelly. Lastly, continuing on in the conference, Joan states that she has the right to kill Kelly in order to save another persons life which in that case is Eva. Though this is true, Eva knows the real reason they did the transfer which can tell from the quote “She saw Eva’s fingers move on the keys and paused. “‘Not to save my life. Just to know.’” (Dickinson 144) Eva states the real reason why they did the transfer which is in fact just to know and research and soon after Joan says “‘Eva herself could tell you how unhappy i was about what happened in the case of Stefan and of Sasha …’” (Dickinson 144). This quote shows the amount of chimpanzees that lost their lives due to this experiment but this could have been stopped if chimps had personage. Though this may
