In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee she shows that in her time there was a lot of prejudice. Some characters were able to see through this and show honesty, kindness, and innocence. Though not all people were like this and some were considered cruel and reckless, but no one stood up to them. Atticus Finch and Scout were able to see through this and know who was innocent. Tom Robinson was innocent and kind, but people judged him on what he appeared to be instead of what he really was. The person who was guilty, Bob Ewell got away humiliation. All these characters developed through the story showing kindness, honesty, innocence and cruelty all at once. Atticus Finch was a honest man, he says what he thinks and does what he says. He even tells Scout his main reason for taking the case in the first place. “If I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (Lee 100). He later states that every lawyer goes through a tough or challenging case that affects him personally. This case was that once in lifetime case, he couldn’t refuse to do it, because it would go against his values, but he also didn’t like knowing that Scout and Jem had to live with some of his consequences. Though Scout and Jem are not all alone, he tells Scout to “hold your head high and keep your fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change” (Lee 101).
