Back in the 1930’s, American people faced many problems. In the 1930s, the americans faced the Great Depression. This was a major problem in America. Because of the Great Depression, many people suffered from all the natural disasters happening, and with all the problems that occurred during the Great Depression made it worse. People had to work at ranches to pay off debts and to be able to afford somewhere to live. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, it shows many examples of the many struggles that the Americans faced in the 1930s. Some problems that the americans struggled with was mental illness, and racism, but they found a way to cope with their struggle. John Steinbeck uses Crooks, an african american man, as an example of discrimination. An example is, “’Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black. They say I stink. Well, I tell you, all of you stink to me.” This quote shows how much racism was shown in the ranches back then. In the book, the people who aren’t someone of color are treated with respect and as actual humans while the people of color are discriminated. They are isolated from activities, jobs, and many other things. Because of their skin color, people would treat them badly. Another example of Crooks being discriminated is when he isn’t allowed into the bunkhouse because of his skin color. He is put in another room so that he can’t interact with the other workers. In the book, Crooks realizes that if he is found no longer, then he would be thrown out. Crooks wants a place where he can be himself and be able to work somewhere he won’t be judged.
