1984 Essay In the novel, 1984 by George Orwell he puts how we as a society could potentially reach the complete destruction of our fundamental freedoms into perspective. While we definitely have not reached complete totalitarianism yet it is not out of the question to ponder if we are on the brink or approaching it. Similar to Big Brother's way of getting mass control of people by recreating history and brainwashing them into fully believing whatever he wants, he is more upfront about it but both strategies are forms of propaganda that leave the “targets” thinking they have their own ideas but really they don’t. Big brother dictates what the party tells the public regardless of how true it is, this happens in today's society all over every platform. The news we hear has all been carefully constructed and switched around to take advantage of what has happened and use it as a tool of mind control. In 1984 all people (with the exception of the party)wore the same raggedy clothes, ate the same food and lived in the same rundown apartments, there was no diversity. This physiological manipulation tactic completely obliterated any sense of independence and individuality within the people of Oceania further pushing everyone to an even more depersonalized zombie like state. Much like how banishing sexual relations versus overplaying sex gives the same affect of drawing people away from real connections, stripping people of their right to create whatever kind of being they want to look like and be gives the same affect as letting people do anything and everything they want with themselves. With the millions of new styles, makeup looks, permanent body modifications, even sexuality and gender identification and all other ways of separating ourselves from the crowd we have already reached a point where doing many of these things is seen as controversial and creates yet another block to turn humans against beings of their own kind.
